Nart is an avid romance reader who dabbles in other stuff when she has the spoons. When she’s not reading she’s a bureaucrat both professionally and as an activist because she’s a masochist. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Nart's Quick Questions interview.)

Scandalized by Ivy Owens

January 14, 2023 by Nart 1 Comment

Average person meets incognito celebrity trope, but make it believable and compelling. Plot: Georgia is a journalist hunting her first big story. She bumps into a childhood friend/crush when they’re stranded by flight delays and sparks fly, but she’s based out of LA and he’s based out of London and they’re both Busy AdultsTM so it’s obviously a one and done. Only turns out that (a) he has essential information for her investigation, and (b) he’s one of the most famous actors in the world. […]

The Perfect Crimes of Marian Hayes by Cat Sebastian

November 16, 2022 by Nart 1 Comment

Crime and punishment, the Cat Sebastian way. Plot: The story weaves somewhat with the last book – The Queer Principles of Kit Webb – with Kit’s life long best friend and co-conspirator having learned the tragic truth that he was, in all likelihood, the true heir to the dukedom that Kit’s own Lord Holland had been prepared to take over his entire life. Rob is enthusiastically anti-monarchist and couldn’t want anything less. But he is a criminal, so he decides he ought to at least get 500 pounds […]

“I’d always write ‘you were the best I ever had.’ Or something stupid like that.”

Tanqueray by Brandon Stanton and Stephanie Sohnson

November 15, 2022 by Nart 1 Comment

Humans of New York creator Brandon Stanton teams up with intensely human, long time New York resident Stephanie Johnson to tell a story that doesn’t fit on a single picture’s description on Instagram. Stephanie is something of a tragic figure, although I think she would cringe and resent such a description. But as she told the story of her life (she narrates the audiobook), it was hard for me not to see the bright young girl who had to fight against racism and sexism at […]

“I create investment algorithms. I’m usually in bed by nine. In what situation would I have been arrested and restrained with zip ties?”

Something Wilder by Christina Lauren

November 14, 2022 by Nart Leave a Comment

Plot: Lily Wilder is miserable. Her dad, a famous archeologist and deadbeat dad, sold off the family farm that was her life plan to manage, then promptly died. So for the last decade, she’s been making ends meet running a tour company based on, to her endless chagrin, his supposed claims to have found and hidden an enormous fortune in the deserts of Utah. The plan is to buy back the farm one day, but that’s more of a dream than the goal at the […]

“What a clever, doomed money I am.”

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky

November 12, 2022 by Nart Leave a Comment

Do you remember Starship Troopers? That perfect 1997 classic about a militaristic future where earth has encountered an alien species so foreign that war is the only viable path forward? And did you, like me, wish you got to learn more about the bugs? This is that book. It’s like Star Trek: Deep Space 9 on whatever is more intense than steroids. This is Asimov Foundation series on super alien steroids. I *need* you to read it, and then I *need* you to come back […]

“Don’t knock white rappers from the 90’s. Where would we be as a country without the dope rhymes of Vanilla Ice?”

The Fastest Way to Fall by Denise Williams

November 12, 2022 by Nart Leave a Comment

A body positive romance where our heroine gets to enjoy exercise for the sake of it (rather than to achieve some ideal) AND to be a person outside of her size. We also get to have a hero that has more going for him than being hot and attracted to fat girls. Plot: Britta has been trying to get her writing career off the ground for a long time. So far, she’s gotten as far as working for an online publication, even one that isn’t […]
