Good evening, everyone. I'm Leslie Monster, and this is Nightline. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: narfna's Quick Questions interview.)

narfna's Reviews:

In case you were wondering, Christopher Marlowe is a little shit, according to this author.

Shadow of Night (All Souls, #2) by Deborah Harkness

October 19, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

It has been a bit since I read this, so this review will be a bit lacking in details as I struggle to remember why I rated this three stars. I remember the middle particularly being a bit of a slog. Also, not much happened plot-wise for a 600ish page book. The author clearly just got really excited about putting her characters in a 16th century setting with a bunch of famous people from that era (and lots of non-famous people as well, to be […]

I’m so, so glad I got back into Robin Hobb’s books. Totally worth it.

Fool's Errand (The Tawny Man, #1) by Robin Hobb

October 18, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

It’s been a few weeks now* and I’m still trying to wrap my head around how much this book ensorcelled me, and how weird that felt after my (mostly) negative experience with the first Fitz trilogy a handful of years back. I suppose I should have seen this coming, though, with how much I loved The Liveship Traders, but a lot of things I didn’t like about the first Fitz trilogy were actually addressed here, and I’m sure there’s a bit of me in this […]

A good young adult book that I probably read too late in life.

Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green & David Levithan

October 18, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

I’m rounding down on this one for now, after weeks (months) of letting it sit in limbo because I couldn’t make up my mind how I felt about it. But this is a true 3.5 star book right here. Parts of it I loved and found very funny and charming and parts of irritated the hell out of me. The ending is very heartwarming and the characters are ultimately lovable. I think I might have just missed my window on loving this one. Too bad, […]

First it was spiders, then it was octopuses, now it’s . . . everything. Just wait for the bits with the rats.

The Doors of Eden by Adrian Tchaikovsky

October 4, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

Adrian Tchaikovsky is obsessed with non-human, non-alien sentience. This book was not what I expected, and yet, makes perfect sense in retrospect. A lot of very similar themes to the Children of Time books. This one didn’t quite fire up my imagination the way the Children of Time books did, but I quite enjoyed it! So, not space opera (like I thought? for some reason???) but multiverse. But, a very unique take on the multiverse. The book starts on a more intimate level, with two […]

A mystery on the moon.

The Relentless Moon (Lady Astronaut, #3) by Mary Robinette Kowal

October 4, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

This is my favorite of these books so far, but I will admit that there is just something about Kowal’s writing that doesn’t perfectly gel with my tastes. I’m curious enough to keep going to see how this series turns out, but I may need to rethink reading any more of her books (I also was pretty unenthused about the first book in her fantasy-Austen-pastiche series). We switch narrators from Elma York (who is on her way to Mars during the course of this book) […]

“Friendship can be as deep as the ocean. It’s all a kind of love, and love isn’t any one kind of thing.”

Tuesday Mooney Talks to Ghosts by Kate Racculia

October 4, 2021 by narfna 4 Comments

This book is rightly subtitled: An Adventure. I approve of that. It is an adventure! Reading this book is like bringing childhood and games back into adulthood (though one of the characters is a teenager). And it also has really good character work on top of that. Another way to describe this book is imagine if Ready Player One was set in the real world, and it was full of three-dimensional ladies and also ghosts: Boston multimillionaire dies, leaves game for the public, rewards the winners with […]
