A Spindle Splintered (Fractured Fables, #1) by Alix E. Harrow

December 8, 2021 by narfna 6 Comments

This was so fun! I didn’t actually know what this book was really about going in. I knew it was a Sleeping Beauty retelling, and that Alix E. Harrow wrote it, and that was all I needed. So the actual premise was surprising and refreshing! There’s definitely a reason the title for this series of novellas is ‘Fractured Fables.’ Harrow notes in her afterword, she pitched this book to her editor as “I want to Spider-Verse some fairy-tales.” I mean, who can’t get behind that? […]

90s Bitch: Media, Culture, and the Failed Promise of Gender Equality by Allison Yarrow

December 8, 2021 by narfna 4 Comments

This was a secondary optional pick for one of my IRL book clubs (I’m in two now and it is great; the next person I see making fun of book clubs gets a virtual punch in their sensitive bits—book clubs are friendship, books, and food, fuck you) and I’m glad I read it, although it was a far from a perfect read. When it was on, I really enjoyed it. When it was off, steam came out of my ears. The perspective this book takes […]

Re-reading Mistborn, Part Five

Shadows of Self (Mistborn, #5) by Brandon Sanderson

December 8, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

Still love this. Neat to see the pieces set up beforehand. I will be honest with you. I do not want to write this review. Sometimes you just don’t want to make thoughts about the things you love. But I have to write this review, at least 250 words, because of made up commitments that I could totally ignore if I really wanted to (hello, CBR, I cross-posted this to Goodreads!), but instead hold myself to anyway, because apparently doing that is something my subconscious […]

I have finished The Witcher!

Season of Storms (The Witcher, #0.6) by Andrzej Sapkowski

December 8, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

I mean, this was fine. It was sort of a nostalgic good time to go back to when the Witcher was just a Witcher and not failing to save the world and failing at being a foster dad simultaneously, and like, tramping around the countryside with vampires and dwarves. We even get some good old fashioned Dandelion/Geralt bonding time. But at the same time, this story (which is set sometime in the middle of the second book of short stories), is also a blatant cash […]

November 29, 2021 by narfna 7 Comments

Thank you so much to Junior Cannonballer Bibliophile (according to faintingviolet, she will be joining us next year) for these two Kate Daniels books. They will very much help me in my 2022 project to read All the Kate Daniels. Very timely gift, and much appreciated!

I love this series so much.

The Man Who Died Twice (Thursday Murder Club, #2) by Richard Osman

November 29, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

I don’t even want to talk about it. I kind of want to read both books in the series again right now. They’re just the perfect mix of humor, pathos, mystery, cleverness, impishness, and intrigue. I continue to be so, so impressed by the way that Osman mixes these various elements together so well, so that one moment you’re laughing, one minute you’re puzzling out the mystery elements, and another you’re extremely sad because these character so perfectly represent the tragedy of being human, which […]
