Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

August 28, 2024 by narfna Leave a Comment

Okay, so this rating makes it seem like I wasn’t a huge fan of this book, but I liked it, I really did! It’s been over a month now, and it’s still in my head and it feels good, hasn’t soured, haven’t forgotten it. But I had a bit of a hard time getting through it while reading, and the magic system was a bit too woobly for me. This is fantasy horror book set in Mexico City in the 1990s, following Montserrat, a film […]

The Hobbit: Or, There and Back Again by J.R.R. Tolkien

August 13, 2024 by narfna 5 Comments

As I’ve written about The Hobbit before, and because other people definitely have as well, and much better than I have, this review will be mostly about the new audiobook productions of Tolkien’s works, which are narrated by Andy Serkis, of Gollum fame. So far I have only listened to this lovely production of The Hobbit, but I have the full trilogy and The Silmarillion also ready to go for whenever I am feeling like a re-read. And chances are, now that I know how […]

Evocation (The Summoner's Circle, #1) by S.T. Gibson

August 13, 2024 by narfna Leave a Comment

Urban fantasy but not? The center of the plot here is actually the developing relationship between its three main characters: David, Moira, and Rhys. Really, the demon possession is just background. But it’s good background! Here’s the set-up: David and Rhys used to date in college. David comes from a family steeped in magic and has been groomed since the age of five to become the head of the secret society his family started, and his dad was abusive. David is an alcoholic and it […]

Someone You Can Build a Nest In by John Wiswell

July 31, 2024 by narfna 2 Comments

This is a ridiculous book that I loved very much. Also, because I have low spoons at the moment and also because I couldn’t do better, here is the blurb: Shesheshen has made a mistake fatal to all monsters: she’s fallen in love. Shesheshen is a shapeshifter, who happily resides as an amorphous lump at the bottom of a ruined manor. When her rest is interrupted by hunters intent on murdering her, she constructs a body from the remains of past meals: a metal chain […]

The Book of the Most Precious Substance by Sara Gran

July 25, 2024 by narfna Leave a Comment

This was a fascinating read! I can see why it comes so highly recommended by people whose opinions on books I trust. This is also a genremash book, with a little bit of lot of stuff thrown in, and done very well. We’ve got horror, fantasy (on the dark end), literary fiction, and a bit of a mystery plot as well. I will not be talking hugely about the plot, because watching it unfold is too fun to spoil, but this starts off about a […]

“Who cared about sex, really? When what you needed was someone to talk to in the dark.” CBR BINGO – Smash (Cannonball!)

Margo's Got Money Troubles by Rufi Thorpe

July 15, 2024 by narfna 8 Comments

“There is a desperation to a novel that is unsettling. The world so painstakingly re-created in miniature; this tiny diorama made of words. Why go to all this trouble, to create me, to seduce you, to enumerate so many different breakfast cereals? To make the cunning tiny apartment, the itsy-bitsy Jinx? It’s like going to meet your new boyfriend’s family for the first time and discovering they are all paid actors. It’s almost easier to believe I’m real than to understand what’s actually going on. […]
