Don't Fear the Reaper (The Lake Witch Trilogy, #2) by Stephen Graham Jones

March 28, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

So this was a really good book! But it had extremely large shoes to fill. My expectations weren’t that high for it, but only because I purposefully set them low knowing that living up to the genius that was My Heart is a Chainsaw was just going to be a really tall order. I feel like I need to re-read both this one and the first one pretty soon and take it slowly, and tab and annotate, because I got in my own way here. […]

“For here was the thing that no fairy tale would ever admit, but that she understood in that moment: love was not inherently good.”

The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean

March 21, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

This was a weird and unique read. If you like darker fantasy that plays with ideas as the basis for stories, this might be a good one for you to check out. It was relatively short, but the imagination the author showcases was really fun, and the icky elements were icky in a good way. I’m not quite sure how to talk about the book, though! The main character here is Devon, a Book Eater, which is a human-like being who instead of eating food, […]

I couldn’t think up a title so this is my title.

White Horse by Erika T. Wurth

March 20, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

This is a tough one to rate because half of my strange reaction to it is I’m sure just bumping up a little against the writing style, but the other half is that it genuinely could have been written better in parts. There was A LOT of telling not showing, and the third-act conflict made the MC come across as pretty stupid. A lot of the elements here were interesting individually but didn’t seem to come together at the end? Our main character is Kari […]

A great time was had.

Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn

March 16, 2023 by narfna 3 Comments

A great time was had. People were slain, revenge was had, plots were foiled, and women of a certain age came out of retirement to clear their names and kick some ass. There’s also a cat named Kevin in here, and I just think that’s important. I don’t actually think I have too much to say about this one. There wasn’t much deep about it, it’s just a good book, a thriller but more on the cozy end than not. A cozy thriller! Who knew […]

“And they all liv’d together in a little crooked house.”

Crooked House by Agatha Christie

March 15, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

Ooh, I got really into this one. It’s been a month since I’ve finished so I’ve had some time to think (though I do of course wish I’d written the review right away, but alas) and I think the reason that I loved this one so much is that it’s one of the few non-detective mystery novels to get the mystery part right and have it be believable. A lot of the time, as a mystery fan when encountering books with non-detective main characters, there […]

The penultimate Kate Daniels novel.

Magic Binds (Kate Daniels, #9) by Ilona Andrews

March 13, 2023 by narfna 6 Comments

This is my favorite one of these so far. Everything is finally coming together. This is also actually the first of these books where I feel emotionally invested in Kate/Curran as a couple, which is kind of mind-boggling if you think about it. I’m really not reading this for the romance, but the worldbuilding and the side characters, and also Kate is a badass. Here’s the blurb, because I just can’t right now: “Kate and the former Beast Lord Curran Lennart are finally making their […]
