Good evening, everyone. I'm Leslie Monster, and this is Nightline. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: narfna's Quick Questions interview.)

This one comes down to personal taste. I don’t write very many reviews like this — where it’s clear the author was good with words and had a brain in his head, even some good things to say — but where I just can’t stand the way it’s presented. The Reluctant Fundamentalist, I gather, was somewhat revelatory when it was first published, as it was among rare company in being a post-9/11 novel told from a non-white, non-American perspective. I don’t know very much about Mohsin […]

Devastating, but entirely necessary.

Initially, I only gave this four stars because it was just such a difficult reading experience. And I don’t mean difficult as in skill level. I mean it in terms of emotional effort. I usually reserve my five star rating for those books that end with me fist-pumping in the air and running screeching around the room while my pores ooze out excitement and love, and this is not the sort of book that inspires that kind of reaction. I think this says a lot about […]

Annoy, tiny blonde one, annoy like the wind!

June 9, 2014 by narfna 7 Comments

For five years, May 17th was an actual day of mourning for me. I put it on my calendar and wore all black. May 17th, 2007 was the day the CW canceled Veronica Mars. This five year period ended for me on March 13th, 2013 — O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! — when Rob Thomas and Kristen Bell announced they were Kickstarting the return of V-Mars, one of my favorite television heroines of all time. My love for her transcends my ability to think critically. I backed the project […]

This is the bravest kid I’ve ever heard of.

June 6, 2014 by narfna Leave a Comment

Wow, I just zoomed right through this. For a fifteen year old, Maya Van Wagenen has a very compelling voice. Frankly, this would be good even if it was written by someone older. But I can’t get over how brave this kid was to do all of this. I never could have done it when I was her age — at the peak of my miserable weirdo awkwardness. And she writes with humor and compassion that a lot of assholes older than her could do […]

“Behind every exquisite thing that existed, there was something tragic.”

June 5, 2014 by narfna Leave a Comment

Welp. That was different. And very unlike the Wilde I have previously known and loved. I enjoyed the story of this book, but I think what I loved most about it were all the underhanded (and not so underhanded) things Wilde had to say about art and artists. I’m pretty sure all of you already know the basic premise, even if you haven’t read the thing. The beautiful and amoral Dorian Gray, who doesn’t age, has a secret portrait that bears all signs of corruption […]

You gotta learn to play the game.

June 5, 2014 by narfna 2 Comments

You know how sometimes you go to review a book and you just can’t figure out what to say about it? For, like, weeks on end? And meanwhile you keep reading, and your stack of things-to-review just keeps growing. And growing? And grooooowwing. This is one of those times. It’s not that I don’t have thoughts and feelings, and not that I didn’t enjoy the book, because I did and I do, but I’m having a hard time getting up the energy to condense and organize all […]
