It would be reductive to sum this book up as ‘Snow White in the ’60s with racism,’ but you could if you really wanted to. That’s the hook that caught me, after all. But really, the Snow White story is just the way in. It’s not really concerned with the same things that Snow White (or other fairy-tales) is concerned with. Boy, Snow, Bird is not as mysterious of a title as it first appears. Boy, Snow and Bird are all characters in the novel. […]
Interplanetary megastellar hydrostatic, there’s no gravity between us, OUR LOVE IS AUTOMATIC.
The Expanse is one of those series I sort of accidentally fell in love with. I only sort of liked it at first, while also being terrified by it (the first two books especially could fit comfortably into the horror genre, in my opinion). And then the third book hit and I was suddenly really, really into it. I know if I went back and re-read the first two I would retroactively love them, because that’s what always happens to me in these situations (Farscape […]
Welcome to the next installment of WHAT THE HELL DID I JUST READ. Pull up a chair, and have a seat.
So before we get to the explication of weirdness, a couple of things of note that might lend context to this review: 1. With the exception of 2013, I’ve read one of these books a year. I can’t handle more than one in a 365 day period. I think I skipped last year because I ran out of time and also I didn’t care. 2. I spent all of last weekend finally watching season one of Legend of the Seeker, the TV show made by Rob […]
What if the NAZIs had won?
I will admit to y’all up front that I have no idea what I’m about to say in this review. I don’t want this to become one of those roadblock reviews for me. You know, the ones where you just can’t figure out what to say because the whole book just overwhelmed you, and you can’t even figure out your own reaction, let alone how to sum up the book for other people. I have no idea what my reaction is, or how to sum […]
Revisiting a sci-fi classic.
“‘Everything is true,’ he said. ‘Everything anybody has ever thought.’ ‘Will you be all right?’ ‘I’ll be all right,’ he said, and thought, And I’m going to die. Both those are true, too.” Philip K. Dick isn’t an author I’ve had much exposure to. I’ve read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? twice now, and I just finished The Man in the High Castle this weekend. I remember liking Androids when I first read it sometime around 2006. I read it for a Film & […]
I feel like this series is tired.
First Among Sequels is the fifth Thursday Next book, a book series which is impossibly to accurately sum up, because it’s so weird, and stubbornly resists classification (on purpose). I suppose in theory you could start reading the series with this book (after all, I had largely forgotten most of the details of the previous four when I started it and it turned out fine for me), but you’d really lose appreciation for the little details if you did that, and a lot of the […]
