Good evening, everyone. I'm Leslie Monster, and this is Nightline. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: narfna's Quick Questions interview.)

“I think there’s just one kind of folks. Folks.”

Straight up, this is a classic even among classics, and so I’m giving myself permission right up front for this review not to be important or add anything to the conversation at all. I don’t actually think I’m capable of saying anything that hasn’t already been said by people who said it better than I ever could. I feel like the only way this book can be reviewed now is either by looking at it through the context of today’s societal lens, or by relating […]

A little slice of Savannah.

March 28, 2015 by narfna 5 Comments

I’d been looking forward to reading Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil for quite some time. Ever since I read Capote’s In Cold Blood, I’ve been really interested in well-written true crime books, particularly ones written in the form of a non-fiction novel, a form that Capote pioneered. What I ended up getting was one but not really the other. This book isn’t really true-crime, although it has elements of that genre, and there is a murder at the heart of the narrative. But that’s not what […]

Not as game-changing as I thought and hoped it would be, but still fun.

First, a caveat: I was expecting a lot more from this book than it gave me, and those expectations were not unreasonable. In fact, they are a direct consequence of the way Mr. Bradley structured not only this book, but the last book in the series. I was expecting a sort of series reboot: Flavia at boarding school with a new cast of supporting characters, learning to be a spy and such. Or at the very least, that there should be real reason why he […]

A CBR book exchange book finds its mark.

March 24, 2015 by narfna 22 Comments

First off, Malin gave me this book as part of the 2014 CBR book exchange. This is the first of the multiple books I received in that book exchange, and the one the year before, that I’ve actually gotten to (although, I have at least three more planned to read for later this year–thanks, Malin!). For the past couple of years, my romance reading has pretty much been “Courtney Milan,” also thanks to Malin (and Mrs. Julien), but after reading A Week to be Wicked, […]

Rocket Raccoon is the best.

I read some article over the summer when the Guardians of the Galaxy movie came out that listed this as one of the books I should check out if I wanted to beef up on Marvel shnizz before seeing it. I never got around to it, and I’m kinda glad. I would have expected a much different movie afterwards if I had. This is actually the book where the current incarnation of the GOTG were created. Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning pulled together the new […]

Overstuffed and implausible, but still a fun read.

See, this is what happens when you read comics. Reading one inevitably leads to you reading another, and then another, and then oh you have to read this other one to understand that one, and oh then that one because it introduces these characters, and then oh that one because it was the start of the run, and blah blah blah, somehow you end up ordering seven new trade paperbacks in one afternoon, and then your library won’t let you order anymore. This is how […]
