This was okay. Not a bad way to spend an hour, but I think I wanted a different story than it ended up giving me. I just never connected with the characters after I realized it was going to be a different story than I thought it would be after reading the first three pages. Here’s how it starts. Violet is a wallflower at a ball on Christmas Eve, when in comes a seriously injured man fresh from being shipwrecked or something. He’s speaking some […]
Love the book, but frustrated this series is so formulaic.
Okay, so firstly, if I would have read this book first in the series, my reaction would have been something like YEAHHHHHHHHHH. But since it was second and made clear the fact that this series is Pierce’s most formulaic yet, it sort of soured it for me. Individually this book was rock solid. Briar was such a badass. He’s fourteen now and officially a plant mage. He and Rosethorn are traveling the world seeking out new plants and such. In the city of Chammur, they […]
Stephen King does a crime thriller.
I wasn’t planning on reading Mr. Mercedes this year. It just sort of happened. And by “it just sort of happened,” I mean that I was looking for audiobooks to feed my audiobook addiction, and saw this was available and then clicked “download,” even though I knew it wasn’t on my list and I would be using it as one of my twenty-five freebies, because I just can’t resist free candy, dammit. I can’t really say I regretted it, though. The universe seems to have […]
Sigh.
Part of me liked this, and part of me thinks all the characters are idiots, and another part of me is just tired of reading about teenagers trying to run countries and junk like that. I have lots more parts of myself that have thoughts that are in conflict with one another, as well. For instance, the prose is lovely (even if it is in present tense, which: bleeeergh), but because it’s YA, nothing was developed as much as it should be, and plot developments just […]
This is all Malin’s fault.
If you’ll recall from my previous review of Tessa Dare’s A Week to Be Wicked, I mentioned that I would probably be going on a Tessa Dare binge pretty quickly. This is the beginning of that. This one came in from the library yesterday, and I bought two others at Bookmans three hours ago. So this is happening. Dammit. I didn’t like this one as much as A Week to Be Wicked, which is the second book in the Spindle Cove series. A Night to […]
The movie is better.
How often can you say you liked the movie better with a straight face? Not often. Here’s what the movie has going for it: 1. It’s fun and watchable. 2. It has pretty people in it. 3. Horrible things happen to those pretty people. 4. It takes parts of this book and ignores the rest. 5. It completely subverts the pro-military message of the book into a satire. 6. It has Neil Patrick Harris in it as a psychic. 7. It’s cheesy and violent and tries […]
