I would be dishonest if I said this volume wasn’t a bit of a letdown after how much I loved Higher, Faster, Further, More. I still love the art. I still love the characters. I still love the sense of humor. But the three stories that make up this particular volume were just so lightweight. Almost bordering on the absurd. One of these would probably have been okay, but three in a row knocked this down a star. I need a little bit of pathos with my […]
If his middle name is Luck, his first name must be Bad.
One of the worst curses you can fling at a Discworld character is “May you live in interesting times,” hence the title of the book. But aside from it’s promising title, the 17th Discworld book was a bit of a letdown after the fitting soulful musings of Soul Music, but it almost made up for it in sheer volume of jokes and witticisms alone. I wanted to quote something practically every other page. The perfect Discworld book is funny, biting, and deep-hitting. This one was […]
Sex, Drugs and Music With Rocks In.
“He had the feeling, once again, that he’d missed out on something somewhere. He’d never really realized it until the last couple of days. He didn’t know what it was. He just wanted to do things. He didn’t know what they were. But he wanted to do them soon.” “There are millions of chords. There are millions of numbers. And everyone forgets the one that is a zero. But without the zero, numbers are just arithmetic. Without the empty chord, music is just noise.” It […]
The honeymoon is over.
Shit, as they say, is getting real. Sex Criminals, Vol. 1 remains one of the funniest, sexiest, most ridiculous things I’ve ever read. That it’s a comic is only a plus. It would have been funny and sexy and touching if it was just words, but Suzie and Jon and their friends really come to life in the colorful, sometimes profane, artwork. (There are also some truly hilarious visual gags as well.) But if One Weird Trick was all about introducing Suzie and Jon and […]
DID YOU LEAVE BECAUSE OF MY ATTIC WIFE IS THAT WHAT THIS IS ABOUT
If you’re ever having a bad day, you could do worse than self-medicating with maybe a hot bath or some hot cocoa or ice cream or soft pajamas or episodes of Gilmore Girls, but maybe also think about adding Texts From Jane Eyre in there as well. There were parts of this book that made me laugh until tears squeezed out of my eyeholes. There were also other parts, mostly to do with classics and mythology, that made me glad I have my friendly Google […]
A bit of a cliched mess.
This book didn’t really work for me as a whole, but I needed a fluffy dum-dum book very badly, so I enjoyed it anyway. A Lady By Midnight is the third book in Dare’s Spindle Cove series, a place where odd and unwanted women of England flock to recover from their traumas or get away and let their freak flags fly. The whole thing is a feminist fantasy, of course, but that’s part of its charm. Dare’s characters are ones who could never have existed […]
