My favorite of the series so far.

First, a warning: I have officially passed the point of objectivity for this series. You know you’ve passed that point when you no longer care what happens in a book series as long as you get to spend more time in its world hanging out with its characters. This isn’t a place I get to easily, but once I’m there, I never ever leave. Love, it is irrational. With that said, oh boy, this book was awesome. In retrospect, one of my favorite things about […]

Hard to track down Captain Marvel/Avengers crossover.

August 18, 2015 by narfna Leave a Comment

Guys, I waited sooooo long to read this. I originally put it on hold at my library SIX MONTHS AGO. It was “on order” for five of those months. I waited so patiently. And then one day I got an email from my library informing me my hold had been canceled, because they couldn’t find a copy of the book to buy for the library’s collection. BOOOOOO. Hisssssss. So I ordered it through interlibrary loan and waited another month. And then it arrived! There was […]

What the hell even is this book.

Like, don’t be fooled by the gorgeous cover and the sassy blurb on the back cover, or even the simplicity and witty intrigue of the prose if you happen to glance at the first page. This book is HELLA CONFUSING. But, like, in a super interesting and entertaining way? That I can’t really explain? This is not a book for the casual sci-fi reader, first of all. If you like heist stories and stories about con men, you will probably have an okay time, but […]

I mean, I GET it, but I don’t have to be HAPPY about it.

August 14, 2015 by narfna 2 Comments

I have liked every Jim C. Hines book I’ve ever read, and that holds true for The Snow Queen’s Shadow. But I didn’t LIKE like this book. In fact, I think I’m in a fight with it. We definitely weren’t speaking for a while, and I got kind of pouty and shouty with it. Pouty shouty, if you will. The thing about this book, which is the fourth and last in Hines’ Princess quartet, is that it’s a smart, well-written ending to the series. It […]

I demand a tiny glass dragon for a pet. I DEMAND IT.

August 13, 2015 by narfna 3 Comments

Despite all my caterwauling over the formulaic nature of the series, I’ve really enjoyed the last three books. This one is probably tied for my favorite with the second one. That one had that sweet ass battle where Briar goes to town all over the bad guy’s house with his super magical plant powers, and this one had Tris being grouchy and getting a tiny glass dragon for a pet. Plus I really liked the way that T. Pierce dealt with issues of culture and […]

Amelia Peabody, can we be BFFs?

August 11, 2015 by narfna 15 Comments

This was SO MUCH FUN. Almost immediately, like after the very first sentence, I was quite enamored with the whole thing. The tone, the characters, the setting, the banter. Amelia is SO SASSY. She’s an example of one of my favorite character types: a person who can afford to disregard the limitations put on her because of some sort of exception or power. It’s delicious, really, watching her come into her own. So basically Amelia Peabody is a “spinster”* in the late 1800s England. Her […]
