Before I get too far into this review, I just want to state, for the record, Felicia Day has said that she does not really like being dubbed ‘The Queen of the Internet’ or ‘The Queen of the Geeks’ or whatever crown we the people want to bestow upon her, but the fact that she comes unwillingly to power only makes her more worthy, honestly. I do feel a bit bad about potentially making her feel more anxious over this responsibility we’ve all thrust on her, […]
A really good read, but I don’t get all the fuss.
This was a really good book on a lot of levels: 1. Good as historical fiction. Excellent particularly because we get POV characters on both sides of the conflict. 2. Good as literary fiction (at least, according to my standards). I prefer my lit-fic to be on the accessible side, and not to focus exclusively on middle-aged white man problems. But it’s also got extra levels if you want to go digging. 3. Good as writing, in the sense that the sentences strung one after […]
I’m so disappointed that I’m disappointed by this book.
This review has given me real trouble. I LOVED the first book, liked the second quite a bit, and trusted that Abercrombie would give me whatever I needed to love this one, too. In a weird way that I still don’t understand, this third book in his Shattered Sea trilogy has not managed to meet my expectations, even though I’m not sure I had expectations to meet, beyond that I wanted to love it. I’m sort of devastated that it didn’t work for me. While reading, […]
And the story picks up 300 years later . . .
If I hadn’t already read (and been blown away by) the first two books in this series earlier this year, I would have been very impressed with this book. But as it is, even though it is very good and exciting and has great characters and poignant themes and hints at even more to come, it pales when compared to the complexity and madcap storytelling of Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion. Those two books were chock full of stories and characters and layers of […]
Only read this if you think it won’t scare the poop out of you.
This book was equal parts hilarious and utter nightmare fuel. I have never had such an emotionally confusing reading experience. One second, snorting my drink up my nose from laughter, the next trying to shove down the sudden and complete terror I’m experiencing because I’ve been forced to imagine trying to survive in six atmospheres of pressure brought upon by an expanding Earth, or collapsing into a pile of human goo because I’ve lost my DNA, and doing so has reminded me of my mortality […]
Romance novels on audiobook are SO MUCH FUN YOU GUYS.
Good god, people. This was an impulse audio checkout from the library, and it completely consumed every minute of free time I’ve had in the twenty-four hours after I checked it out. I’ve never read a romance novel on audio before, and it was so entertaining. This particular book was very charming and swoonworthy, and I ended up loving it. I mean, I was pathological about this book. I listened to it every chance I got. At one point, I for real snuck my iPhone […]
