Good evening, everyone. I'm Leslie Monster, and this is Nightline. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: narfna's Quick Questions interview.)

narfna's Reviews:

Grossman does The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Pretty sure Quentin is the Eustace.

“The hero pays the price.” Well, shit. If you would have told me last month that not only would I give The Magicians (THE MAGICIANS) four stars, but that I would get so worked up by its sequel that I would burst into tears, I would NOT have believed you. I got soooooo mad and weird when I read The Magicians five years ago, I swore I would never read any sequels, or anything else Lev Grossman ever wrote, and then somewhere along the line […]

Not my fave Tana French, but still great.

“‘I’m the least fanciful guy around, but on nights when I wonder whether there was any point to my day, I think about this: the first thing we ever did, when we started turning into humans, was draw a line across the cave door and say: Wild stays out. What I do is what the first men did. They built walls to keep back the sea. They fought the wolves for the hearth fire.’” “Just about everything in this life is treacherous, ready to twist […]

I did such a 180 on this series, you guys. I can’t even believe it.

Sometimes you read a book and you go temporarily insane. The first time I read this book, I’m pretty sure this happened to me. At the very least, I experienced some sort of existential crisis while trying to sort out my feelings for it. I definitely remember being so upset and flamboozled that I started crying while writing my review over on Goodreads. I still think this book could have maybe been executed a little bit differently to let the readers know that Grossman was […]

Fun sci-fi thriller up until it goes off the rails.

For about the first 75% of this book, I was totally on board. It was thrillery. It was sciencey. It was sciencey-thrillery. There was banter, and mystery, and some stealthy nerd references. There was a hero with an eidetic memory, and some scientists acting super secretive. There was an escalating problem and some freaky-deaky shenanigans involving folding space. And then it all got kind of weird and sort of imploded on itself. The basic plot of The Fold is your standard sci-fi thriller. Hero is […]

Fourth verse, same as the first.

I feel like this review is going to be virtually identical to what I’ve already written for the first three volumes in the series. So let’s just break it down to its component parts: 1. Daniel Abraham has done a fantastic job as an adapter of this series. Everything is clear and exciting and he gets all the most important bits in. 2. Tommy Patterson is a competent artist but I absolutely do not like his style. 3. I hate the way all the faces […]

This series is officially the most batshit thing I’ve ever read.

Temple of the Winds (The Sword of Truth, #4) by Terry Goodkind

October 16, 2015 by narfna 34 Comments

Definitely the worst of these books yet. I almost one-starred it, but the main thing that was making me want to do that was semi-addressed by the end, so I don’t think this series has quite reached the point of untenable badness just yet. (And I want to save the one star, because I’m pretty sure there is much worse to come.) Lately I’ve been forcing myself to write reviews immediately after finishing books, but I made an exception with this one because a) I needed […]
