The Midnight Bargain by C.L. Polk

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 3 Book 2/30 Whoops, I slept on this one. Should have read it sooner! Because it was a delight. You know, if you’re defining “delight” as something that purposefully stokes your anger and your sense of righteousness by making you feel protective of the civil rights and bodily autonomy of fictional characters. With magic! So I guess that is how I define “delight.” I’m not going to go too deep into the world here because part of the fun […]

Double Cannonballing with an unexpected book.

The Sweet Spot by Amy Poeppel

October 23, 2023 by narfna 8 Comments

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 3 Book 1/30 I was genuinely surprised by how much I liked this. I very rarely really connect to contemporary fiction anymore that doesn’t have some sort of genre twist or queer angle. But this was just so charming! I would advise not reading the blurb, because it spoils something that doesn’t happen until over 60% of the way through the book. The Sweet Spot follows several women in Manhattan whose lives are either falling apart or finally coming together. […]

CBRBINGO – POLITICS: A cinnamon roll vampire love interest, and some great fantasy worldbuilding.

Blood Mercy (Blood Grace, #1) by Vela Roth

October 23, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

I really, really liked this. A slow burn fantasy romance where the fantasy is incredibly detailed and satisfying. We’re living the dream! Blood Mercy is the first book in a self-published fantasy romance series. Cassia is our main character, and she is the bastard daughter of a king (a terrible, tyrannical, cruel king). She normally tries to stay away from court in order to stay away from her father, but a once in a lifetime event is about to occur and she needs to be […]

Absolutely not.

Cat Lady by Dawn O'Porter

DNF @ 42% I can’t believe I’m actually doing this, and for this book, but I just can’t do it anymore. The cover says it was a bestseller, but I’m having a hard time believing that. Maybe they did what I did, and bought it off vibes alone and then never finished it or hated it. It’s just so unpleasant to read, and bad weird things are going on. The part where the book officially lost me, I think, was when the main character’s inner […]

“She’s very proud of her crime scene; it must surely be the most pleasant crime scene the cops have ever been to.”

Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q. Sutanto

October 23, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

“You don’t describe your job like that,” Vera scolds. “Is a small job, hah! Can you see men saying that? No, men will talk it up with bullshit, that is why they get even bigger job next time. There is no such thing as ‘small job.’ And don’t say in that silly tone, oh so apologetic, I am just silly woman having a small job. No!” Her index finger shoots up and points at Julia’s face like a sword. “You go and do this job […]

I have a five-star killing trope to shake my fist at.

Yours Truly (Part of Your World, #2) by Abby Jimenez

October 23, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

[Insert Tyra Banks here. “We were rooting for you. We were all rooting for you!”] I just, I wanted to give this book five stars so very badly. Halfway through, I was absolutely ready to slap that five-star rating on it. And then the Miscommunication Trope came calling, and it was one of the worst examples I’ve ever seen. And I just couldn’t give it five stars anymore. I’m super sad about it. But this book is absolutely still worth reading! Just prep yourself for […]
