Good evening, everyone. I'm Leslie Monster, and this is Nightline. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: narfna's Quick Questions interview.)

Truly, I do not understand why this is beloved.

From Blood and Ash (From Blood and Ash, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 3 Book 9/30 Hahahah, what am I going to say about this book? I have no idea! We’ll see what comes out once I start typing the rest of this review. Okay, for those of you who don’t know, this is a fantasy romance about Poppy, who is the “Maiden” (don’t worry, the precise definition of what this really means will never become clear) and she lives in a world where people can Ascend to a type of limited […]

“I don’t want to disappear. I want to exist in my body, with these new possibilities. Possibilities. Perhaps that is one of the main components of life lost to lack of representation. Options erased from the imagination. Narratives indoctrinated that we spend an eternity attempting to break. The unraveling is painful, but it leads you to you.”

Pageboy: A Memoir by Elliot Page

October 24, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 3 Book 8/30 This book will not give you outrage or gossip. It will not get you all tingly with stuff it feels like maybe you shouldn’t know, and you will end the book not knowing who several of the main players are, because Elliot values privacy and is a good person. This book is first and foremost the story of Elliot coming to terms with his gender identity and transness amid a world that devalues and dismisses it, […]

More dangerous park, less memoir, please.

Action Park: Fast Times, Wild Rides, and the Untold Story of America's Most Dangerous Amusement Park by Andy Mulvihill & Jake Rossen

October 23, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 3 Book 6/30 Action Park tells the story of the country’s most dangerous theme park, from the perspective of the son of the man who owned it. Gene Mulvihill wanted to provide a theme park that catered to people who didn’t want to passively experience things, but be the actor in the rides and attractions. His lax attitude towards safety standards and his strong belief that people had the right to endanger themselves meant injuries and near-drownings were the norm […]

A basic intro to some famous cults.

Cults: Inside the World's Most Notorious Groups and Understanding the People Who Joined Them by Max Cutler & Kevin Conley

October 23, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 3 Book 5/30 I liked this but it didn’t really deliver what it promised. We do see “inside the world’s most notorious groups” (there were quite a lot of non-American cults in here, which was a pleasant surprise), but I think it is disingenuous of the subtitle to imply that this book tries to understand why people joined these cults, at least in any way beyond the most shallow and obvious (vulnerable people are catnip to cult leaders, who […]

A solid mystery/thriller set in Wales.

The Last Party by Clare Mackintosh

October 23, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 3 Book 4/30 This got better as it went. I’m glad, because up until a key reveal over halfway through the book, I was pretty emotionally uninvested in what was going on. There so many point of view characters! Too many, I think. Made it a lot harder to get invested. Also, I much prefer mysteries where the people solving the crimes discover things, instead of us as readers discovering them via flashback, which is mostly what happens here. […]

Ugh, I’m still thinking about the thing with the hamsters.

Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell

October 23, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 3 Book 3/30 I figured out about half of what was going on here before it was revealed, but it didn’t matter because this book was really well written. This is only my second book by Lisa Jewell, and she is two for two (both books about teenagers who have disappeared, and they have another similarity as well but that’s spoilers). I read this in a day, staying up two hours past my bedtime to finish it (and my […]
