Good evening, everyone. I'm Leslie Monster, and this is Nightline. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: narfna's Quick Questions interview.)

narfna's Reviews:

It’s not you, it’s me. I don’t like you.

I want to be really clear up front lest I scare people off this book who might otherwise really enjoy it: I didn’t really enjoy this book (although I didn’t dislike it, either), but it’s entirely a case of wrong book, wrong reader, not that the book is poorly written or objectionable in any way.  I can definitely see why people would love it, but I think several factors combined together with my personal tastes meant I never really connected with it emotionally. I’m especially upset […]

The widow who refused to be seduced.

May 11, 2016 by narfna 2 Comments

I picked this book up on impulse after reading alwaysanswerb’s review. The idea of a romance novel that takes a very tropey premise and almost aggressively refuses to wallow in it intrigued me. It ended up being a really good read, even if the author’s refusal to give my id exactly what it wanted frustrated me. The part of me that appreciates good characterization and realistic plotting and development was very happy with this book. Our heroine is Martha Russell, a newly widowed woman who […]

Does *anyone* who’s read this book think Richard is a hero?

May 11, 2016 by narfna 8 Comments

I’m about to get all up in this book’s craw for some terrible choices on the part of the author, and the part of his characters, but I would like to state up front that I am not opposed to characters making choices that are morally questionable. If characters–especially “the good guys”–don’t mess up every now and again, we usually find them flat or boring. What I AM opposed to is characters making morally questionable choices without either the characters or the author bothering to […]

I’d hang out with Bigfoot around a campfire. He seems like a cool dude.

This is a fun little novella/short story collection set in the Dresdenverse. Three linked short stories are included here, taking place at varying times throughout Harry’s history. “B is for Bigfoot” takes place after Fool Moon, “I Was a Teenage Bigfoot” occurs after Dead Beat, and “Bigfoot on Campus” is sandwiched between Turn Coat and Changes, so the Harry in this collection is the Harry from Before, still working as a wizard PI. All in all, I found this book to be a fun, light […]

I had so much fun listening to this. Sometimes you just need nerd fluff.

Martin Banks is a jackass. That’s all I kept thinking during the first half or so of this book. To be clear, my thinking the main character was a jackass in no way hindered my enjoyment of the story. In fact, I’m fairly certain the book encouraged that opinion. See, one day Martin is sitting at home being lazy, hacking websites just for the fun of it (he sees himself as a benevolent hacker, because he doesn’t cause any harm–he just likes doing it) when […]

My least favorite in the series.

The continuing adventures of Ashley/narfna re-reading The Dresden Files in 3 . . . 2 . . . 1 . . . PARTY. I’m not sure exactly why I thought this book was better than the first one when I read it seven (seven! gross, that’s so many) years ago, but if you care to read my initial review, which I have included in the parentheses following this sentence, you’ll see that was indeed the case. (Original review from August 2009: “Better than the first one. I’m hanging in […]
