Fuck this book. And it started out so well! The writing is actually gorgeous. I can see why many, many people like this book. Really, Hanya Yanagihara knows how to use language. Unfortunately, the story she told was not worthy of it. The longer I read this book, the more I dreaded reading it, the worse my feelings got as I read, and the more I hated it for existing. Then I read a bunch of interviews by her and hated the book even more. […]

Tidbits from the world of the First Law.

This is a solid 3.5 star anthology collection. Most of the stories were good, not great, and a few were wonderful. I’m thinking particularly of “The Beautiful Bastard,” which shows us a pre-Gurkish torture ruination Glokta, and the very entertaining “Two’s Company,” which takes two characters that form the backbone of this collection, and pairs them with my personal favorite Abercrombie character, Whirrun of Bligh, aka Cracknut (’cause his nut is cracked). Even though all of these stories could be read on their own, Abercrombie […]

I read this book all in one go, so that should tell you something right there. It’s Canadian teenager Hermione Winters’ senior year. She’s co-captain of her school’s cheer team, and she’s very serious about it. For her and her best friend Polly, cheer is a sport, and she is an athlete. In fact, for her small town school, the Palermo cheer team is the best sports team they have. But at cheer camp, right before the start of senior year, Hermione is drugged and […]

And so I disliked a book written by Gene Luen Yang.

July 6, 2016 by narfna 7 Comments

I’ve read all of Gene Luen Yang’s comics, so it was a no-brainer that I would be reading his version of Superman. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy it. Actually, I’ve never really enjoyed a Superman comic, so this may be on me. But before we get to the actual comic, a complaint. WTF, why is the DC comics universe so messed up??? I mean, it took me an hour after reading this to determine which version of Superman I was reading, where it was in the […]

I didn’t quite love this second volume of Giant Days as much as I did the first one, but this is still an unbelievably fun series and I can’t wait for Vol. 3. Vol. 2 covers issues #5-9 of the series, from a winter ball through exams, dating crises, and what happens when you watch too many episodes of Friday Night Lights in a row. Crotchety Susan is for once the only one having reliable sexytimes, while Daisy is going through a questioning phase, and […]

You guys will love this.

July 6, 2016 by narfna 2 Comments

Okay, so at first I was reading this and it was enjoyable, but I’m thinking, “I don’t get the fuss.” And then I read like, three more pages, and I was in love. Whoops. Giant Days follows three college freshmen, Susan, Esther and Daisy. As the comic starts, they’ve been in school only about three weeks and have made fast friends with one another. Susan is our narrator. She’s smart and feministy and has a temper. Esther is very pale, pretty and “practically consumptive.” Daisy […]
