Neil Gaiman just gets it, man. This collection of miscellaneous non-fiction writings consists of various speeches, articles, essays, and introductions, and what it turns out to be is sort of a hodge-podge portrait of Gaiman as a writer and reader. Not every essay was of interest to me, and I did skip some of them that covered books I’d never read (and didn’t want spoiled . . . also, the one about Dogsbody Neil tells the reader to skip straight up and then come back […]

This is how you do young adult fiction.

Dammit, I knew I should have written this review when I first finished the book, but I decided to push it off because it seemed too hard to try and sum up all my feeeeelings, but joke’s on me, now it’s even harder! Sherman Alexie has been one of my favorite writers since I was in college and one of my English comp teachers made us watch Smoke Signals, which is based off Alexie’s short story, “This is What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona,” and […]

My first Brandon Sanderson 3-Star Read, with a caveat!

October 12, 2016 by narfna 2 Comments

Sad to say White Sand didn’t quite work for me. That’s a first for me and Brandon Sanderson, but in this instance, I’m hesitant to count it. I didn’t realize until I opened this book up that Sanderson didn’t actually write it. Okay, but wait, let me back up a little. So White Sand is actually Brandon Sanderson’s first completed novel. He put it away for a while after writing it, and then brought it out years later to revamp it, but ultimately, it was […]

So I got all whiny about Vol. 3, which is the trade published right after Lumberjanes transitioned from a limited series to an ongoing one. I wasn’t quite sure how to feel about it. They changed the artists all around (I hate when comics do that), and the story felt less silly and frenetic. It wasn’t bad, just different. But Brooke Allen is back as the artist here in Vol. 4 (hooray!), and the story felt more like it did in Vols. 1 & 2 […]

“People in the dark are quite different, aren’t they?”

Once again guessed the murderer by complete accident. I’m the mystery reader equivalent of those characters you often see in farces who are complete idiots (usually lovable) and bumble about doing everything so wrong they come back around and get everything right. I really enjoyed this book, which was apparently Christie’s 50th (although publishers had to count a book of short stories to make this true, and they really wanted to, because publicists never change). It starts out kind of like a game. An ad […]

I liked this book way more than I thought I would.

I’m such a sucker. Two books in a row have turned me into a dripping snot monster. Well, to be fair, I think I cried harder at this one than I otherwise would have because I’d cried so hard at Code Name Verity the day before. I was all prepped to be emotional; all my systems were primed. At least this was a happy cry. Way better than that ‘OH MY GOD THIS IS SO SAD MY HEART IS DYING’ crying I did on that […]
