Good evening, everyone. I'm Leslie Monster, and this is Nightline. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: narfna's Quick Questions interview.)

Imagine a world where Robert Jordan knew how to write women.

This is the first Wheel of Time book I haven’t enjoyed more than the last. I was hoping the loss of narrative control I’d been warned about would start later for me than book five. It varies from person to person, from all the reviews I’ve read; some people note a decline starting with this one, others as late as eight, some never (though those are rare, at least in my friends’ GR reviews). Even though I ended up enjoying this book more than I […]

“O, full of scorpions is my mind!”

I’ve only read Macbeth once before now, and it was halfway through my undergrad, so I didn’t really remember anything about it other than, “Out, damned spot!” and the witches chanting “double, double toil and trouble”. Incidentally, I’m never going to forget that second one, because a) the film version of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban turned it into a song (the kids were holding large toads?????), and b) It’s also the name of a Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen movie I watched […]

Sympathy for the Devil.

“Nonetheless, he found it possible to look at the man beside him without anger—with, rather, a measure of sympathy—for Perry Smith’s life had been no bed of roses but pitiful, an ugly and lonely progress toward one mirage and then another.” – – – I remember being gobsmacked by this book when I read it for the first time six years ago, and now upon re-read, I find it’s just as good. In fact, it’s one of those books where the satisfaction comes not from […]

A good, warm Poirot to listen to on a cold, wintery day.

So I’m going to confess up front that I did a very bad thing. When I got about halfway through this, I decided it would be a great idea to spoil myself completely on the ending. I don’t know why I do this. It’s like once a mystery’s got me, I can’t even wait five minutes to find out how it turns out. Wikipedia and the Internet are terrible enablers in this habit of mine. And yes, I’ve done it before, though never to a […]

Just as good as the first one, except for this one thing I hated.

This book would have been five stars for me, easy, if it wasn’t for this one thing I will talk about in the spoiler tagged section below. But for the most part, Crooked Kingdom (and the series as a whole) is a fun, character driven, well-written fantasy heist romp. This book is also technically YA, but it doesn’t really read like it (which I gather is different even from Bardugo’s previous series, which shares a universe with this one). I mean, the protagonists are all […]

Guys, have any of you ever had an arepa? Please tell me about it in the comments if so. Thank you in advance.

HOKAY SO. I have now made it through seven books of this series, which is basically like twenty-one normal-sized books, or fourteen above average-sized ones. By the time she finally finishes this series, we might be talking Wheel of Time-level word counts here. All this to say I HAVE DONE HARD WORK, NOW GIVE ME TACOS. I was going to type “cookies”, but dammit I really want some tacos right now. Also, on the last Jane the Virgin episode, I was introduced to the concept […]
