The Princess Trap by Talia Hibbert

November 24, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

Not my fave of hers but still cute. Having a little trouble coming up with anything to say because this is so solidly in the ‘just fine’ category in my mind, which is unusual for a Talia Hibbert. Usually if nothing else, her narrative voice pulls me through and gives the book a boost. This book follows Cherry and Ruben. Cherry is working for a corporate academy school, and Ruben is a prince of a made up country I can’t remember the name of. He […]

The Knights of the Round Table vs. Climate Change

Perilous Times by Thomas D. Lee

November 24, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

Thanks to NetGalley and Ballantine Books for the ARC. It hasn’t affected the contents of my review. The realm is in peril, and the knights of the round table have been called back to duty once again, waking up from under the earth to fight . . . climate change. Among other things. Here’s a little bit of the blurb: “An immortal Knight of the Round Table faces his greatest challenge yet—saving the politically polarized, rapidly warming world from itself—in this slyly funny contemporary take […]

“It was just that whenever she had thought of seeing the world, she had never realized what it would be like to have the world see her back.”

The Magician's Daughter by H.G. Parry

November 24, 2023 by narfna 2 Comments

Just lovely from beginning to end. I really need more people to read this! It’s just such a nice little story. The main character is Biddy, a seventeen year old young woman who washed up on the shores of a magical island as a baby and was taken in by the magician, Rowan, and his rabbit familiar Hutchincroft. She can’t do magic herself, but she is raised to love it and want to protect it. And though she loves living on the magical island of […]

“All the things that are wrong in the world seem conquered by a library’s simple unspoken promise: Here I am, please tell me your story; here is my story, please listen.”

The Library Book by Susan Orlean

November 24, 2023 by narfna 1 Comment

Look, I’m just gonna do the thing. Here is (part of) the blurb: On the morning of April 29, 1986, a fire alarm sounded in the Los Angeles Public Library. As the moments passed, the patrons and staff who had been cleared out of the building realized this was not the usual fire alarm. As one fireman recounted, “Once that first stack got going, it was ‘Goodbye, Charlie.’” The fire was disastrous: it reached 2000 degrees and burned for more than seven hours. By the […]

Whoops, read this back in CBR7 and never continued!

Shards of Honor (Vorkosigan #1) by Lois McMaster Bujold

November 21, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

So I read this book back in CBR7 with the full intention of blasting through the series . . . and then proceeded to not do that. So of course I had to re-read before actually continuing. This is still three and a half stars, but I’m bumping it up this go-round. I’m very glad I re-read this, because I knew I had forgotten most of what happened here, except for the general arc of Cordelia and Aral Vorkosigan, but I didn’t realize HOW much […]

Needful Things by Stephen King

November 21, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

When I put this on my August TBR back in May I was super sure it would be a five star read, and that is not what happened! I also didn’t anticipate buddy reading any book any time soon, let alone completing a 690 page book over a weekend (my version has smaller font, some of the editions are 800-900 pages). But Paula convinced me (here’s her review), and we had a good time! This is not one of my favorite SK books. I don’t […]
