Good evening, everyone. I'm Leslie Monster, and this is Nightline. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: narfna's Quick Questions interview.)

narfna's Reviews:

Look, I just want to give this author five stars but he makes it so difficult!

The Tyranny of Faith (Empire of the Wolf, #2) by Richard Swan

December 19, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

Look, I may feel differently upon re-read, but this author cannot write romance to save his life. Both of these books so far have been made worse by his efforts in that department. His instincts are all wrong. In the first book, it was an underdeveloped and ill-advised “romance” between our narrator, Helena, the apprentice of famed Justice Sir Konrad Vonvalt, and some village rube who had zero personality. Here, it’s between Helena and Vonvalt himself and just UGH. NO. WHY. Luckily the romance never […]

“Beside her, Death set down his tea. ‘How do you feel about this woman? I could infect her with a light plague, perhaps. Or we could give her the pox? Blemished skin may do her vanity some good.'”

Belladonna (Belladonna, #1) by Adalyn Grace

The romance was the least interesting part of this gothic, young adult fantasy. I was here for Signa and her affliction, and the atmospheric, ghost- and poison-infused setting. The fact that the central plot was a murder mystery certainly didn’t hurt. Signa is an orphan of unusual circumstances. When she was a baby, her mother and everyone in their house was poisoned at a party. She was the only survivor, despite being poisoned herself. In fact, Signa cannot die. She can be poisoned, injured, or […]

Book mail from Mythili! :D

December 16, 2023 by narfna 5 Comments

Went on a little bit of a journey here! Mythili bought one of my books from a second party sender who didn’t put the note in that she requested, so I was like 80% positive that my Book Exchange book had arrived, and 20% scared I had a stalker, but Emmalita helped me figure it out, so then I could be relieved the the BEAUTIFUL book I was sent was from a friendly. Here is the first book that arrived, which I was sure would […]

“We all have ways of showing our patriotism, and mine is holding my country to account. I want to dissuade her from her worst, cruellest impulses, for I truly believe that if she does not evolve past them, she will not survive.”

Truth of the Divine (Noumena, #2) by Lindsay Ellis

December 11, 2023 by narfna 3 Comments

I don’t have it in me right now to talk about this book in the way that it deserves. This is a book that explores the fallout from First Contact (and the fallout from covering up First Contact) in practically every way possible. There was so much going on in this book (and all of it done well), I don’t even know how to start summing it up. I’m tempted to just do the bullet points thing. In fact, you know what, fuck it. I’mma […]

“And it so angered me that I finally thought to myself, ‘Bitch, do something yourself instead of just sitting there getting angry. Do something.'”

Elizabeth Taylor: The Grit & Glamour of an Icon by Kate Andersen Brower

What a fascinating life this woman led. I really feel like it would be pretty hard to come away from this book not liking Elizabeth Taylor as a human being. She loved fiercely, struggled publicly, and left a huge legacy that has helped millions of people, and continues to do so. I grew up in the 80s and 90s knowing who Elizabeth Taylor was, just like everyone else, because she was part of the zeitgeist, one of the most famous women ever to live. I […]

“Which is harder: devising an unsolvable problem, or solving that problem?”

The Devotion of Suspect X (Detective Galileo, #1) by Keigo Higashino

November 24, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

I feel like this author and I are just jamming together on the same vibe. I’ve seen other people’s reviews and YouTube reactions/book club live shows and my reactions are so different to theirs. I really feel like I just fall into this author’s worlds and just let him shamelessly manipulate me exactly the way he wants and it’s hard for me to imagine not being enthralled by what’s happening. They’re all like ‘meh,’ and I’m like what are you talking about?!??? This particular tome […]
