This was a fun way to spend several hours, but I actually think I would have liked it better if I had never read Pride and Prejudice. If you’re not aware, Heartstone is debut author Elle Katharine White’s retelling of the Jane Austen classic (a top ten book for me), but with dragons (and such). I want to be clear that I find nothing wrong with this book at all. It’s a cleverly told story that takes the frame of its source material and transforms […]
I might not quit Rick Riordan after all because I liked this book a lot????
This is my favorite thing Riordan has written in years. I think partially I liked it so much because I had such trouble with the first two books in this series, enough that I was almost 100% sure I would stop reading his books after this series was through. I think I’m going to reevaluate that decision based on how much I enjoyed reading The Burning Maze. We’ll see. But aside from liking it simply because it was better than the first two is not […]
I can see why people love this, but I didn’t.
This was really well-written, but I wasn’t in the mood for it. Three stars for now, but probably if I had been in the mood, it would have been four stars, so let’s split the difference. The Poisonwood Bible is an important book, one that is probably good for everyone to read and think about it. The book follows the story of the Price family. The father, Nathan, is a Baptist preacher whose gotten it in to his head to save the souls of the […]
A long-awaited book, not my favorite, but still worth the wait.
I was underwhelmed by the first book in this series when it was published in 2015, and to be honest, I was a little underwhelmed by this one, although it’s a definite improvement. My main complaint with Once Upon a Marquess was that it was too scattered, and the main characters individually and as a couple suffered for it. I also thought their chemistry was a little forced. Both of those complaints were non-existent for me, here. And where I found little sister Theresa an […]
The audiobooks really do make this series better.
This review is mostly going to be me responding to some of my own thoughts from my first review, with some extras thrown in; for example, how I was considering raising this to five stars because I loved Robert Glenister’s narration so much. I love the dead tree versions of this book, but the audio adds another level. Highly recommend if you are so inclined. (I’m leaving my rating at 4.5, rounding down, for now, because of the ending. See below.) Spoilery discussion of several […]
Cute contemporary, bantery, love to hate to love romance.
This book isn’t normally my genre (contemporary, or contemporary romance). But I make exceptions if I’ve read and liked books by the author before, or if someone whose tastes that are similar to mine says a book is worth checking out. Dating You / Hating You fits into both categories. I loved this author duo’s YA book Autoboyography when I read it last month, and this book in particular was a favorite of y’all here at the CBR romance reading hivemind when it first came […]
