I liked this overall, but had a hard time reading it, and it wasn’t what I was expecting. Abby Norman dropped out of college due to debilitating pain she started experiencing one day, and which doctors minimized for years before she finally was semi-diagnosed with Endometriosis (among other things). The title and synopsis of this book makes it seem like more of a book about the relationship between women and doctors, but really this is a memoir that mostly focuses on Abby’s medical history, and […]

Didn’t live up to this Janeite’s expectations.

This was such a mixed bag of a reading experience. Honestly, though, I figured it might be. I’ve read a couple of Shannon Hale’s adult novels before this, and neither of them worked for me. And the Goodreads average rating for this book is not great. But I was still hoping! Especially considering the premise. It wasn’t one of those ‘meh’ reads, either. One second I would be actively hating what was going on, irritated with the main character, the next, something adorable would happen and I […]

Not as good as book one, but still worth reading.

I am sad to say that this book was not as good for me as the first one. I still loved the characters a lot, and there were still all these great, small moments peppered throughout the book. Lara Jean’s family continues to warm my heart. Peter continues to be a huge doofus. Lara Jean is a fashion icon. Some spoilers below, so be warned. I just thought this book was a little weak. Where the first book had at the center of it the whole […]

“I hate caring about stuff. But apparently once you start, you can’t just stop.”

Murderbot is on a mission. A mission of vengeance. He’s* determined to bring the corporation GrayCris as much pain as possible, and has a plan to do it. Except he keeps getting distracted by all these pesky humans who need helping all the time; dammit, that’s not his job anymore, and he doesn’t like them anyway! (He sort of likes them.) *I have once again reverted to male pronouns for this character. I give up and surrender to my brain. I honestly didn’t even know […]

“All his life he’d used words to distract attention from this deep inarticulacy, this unspeakable emotion which he would now have to use words to describe.”

On a prose level, I didn’t enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed the first two, which were extremely clever and a bit raw. Here, with Patrick sober (for several years, it’s implied), he once again is one among many points of view, just as he was in the first book as a five year old, when his parents’ dinner guests held most of the narrative focus. Here the party is for some duke or other on his birthday, and the Princess Margaret is […]

Entertaining thriller; leaned into all the wrong parts. #CBRBingo (3rd Bingo!)

I didn’t expect this book to blow my mind, so I had a good time reading it. It was pretty fucked up, in that what-the-hell-is-going-on sort of way. That made me read it super fast, and I was completely absorbed the whole time. But when the reveal finally happened, it just felt really clichéd the way it played out. This book is about Anna Fox, a former child psychologist, now agoraphobic shut-in, who hasn’t left her house in ten months (almost eleven), and who spends […]
