Good evening, everyone. I'm Leslie Monster, and this is Nightline. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: narfna's Quick Questions interview.)

narfna's Reviews:

Don’t let the cover mislead you. There are no grizzlies on the Appalachian Trail.

I added this book to my TBR the very first day I joined Goodreads in July 2008, so yes I do feel accomplished for finally having read it. And it was a good time! I was a bit worried based on a few reviews I’d read ahead of time that it would be dated, and it was a tiny bit (mostly in some jokes Bryson makes that read a little fatphobic to my 2018 eyes and ears, but would have been absolutely bog standard in […]

“I finally understood what my birth parents did not: my adoption was hard, and complicated, but it was not a tragedy. It was not my fault, and it wasn’t theirs, either. It was the easiest way to solve just one of too many problems.”

I basically read this all in one sitting last Saturday morning. It’s a relative short book at around 220 pages, but I think I would have wanted to read it fast even if it were 400. Nichole Chung, unsurprisingly to anyone who’s read her other work (I’ve mostly done so on The (dearly departed) Toast), is a very good writer. In fact, she started writing about adoption years before this book was published; I remember reading several of her articles about it and thinking at […]

Thank you, Jenny S!

Came home to a rather heavy package from Amazon last night, and found that Jenny S had sent me My Favorite Thing is Monsters, and just in time! I have this on my list for next week, and was going to get it out of the library. She also sent me The Drifter, which I’ve never heard of before but will definitely be reading now, and some Mexican hot chocolate, for her family’s tradition of Jólabókaflóðið. (I make all my hot chocolate Mexican anyway, so this […]

A 2,100 year old Druid and his talking dog Oberon do some magic and stuff.

This was a re-read for me, and I still liked it! I probably would have been okay just going into book two without a re-read and forcing my brain to delve buried memories from chasms deep or whatever, but this was a fast read and I think it was worth it. Lots of little details I know I wouldn’t have remembered, like people’s names, and entire plots . . . I mean, it’s been over four and a half years since I read it the […]

I mean, I don’t want to bust out the ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ again, but I guess I just did.

I feel like I can’t really even muster up enough energy to review this. It was okay, not bad. I just didn’t really enjoy it all that much. Parts of it were very cute, and then parts of it were just there. I guess I just never really felt Ben and Arthur’s connection, it was just told to me over and over again, amidst a staggering amount of dramadrama, which I do not like. Ben is a NY native who has recently broken up with […]

This series is so great, I can’t recommend it enough.

And the final Murderbot adventure is over. Well, not final, I guess, since there is going to be a Murderbot novel in 2020 (hooray!), but final FOR NOW. The initial arc of Murderbot becoming a person has concluded. We come full circle in Exit Strategy, with Murderbot traveling back to rescue Dr. Mensah, and teaming up with the initial group of humans from All Systems Red. Murderbot’s irrational grudge against Gurathin continues to give me life: “I don’t want to be a pet robot.” “I […]
