Good evening, everyone. I'm Leslie Monster, and this is Nightline. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: narfna's Quick Questions interview.)

narfna's Reviews:

Book two is definitely the highlight of this series, but this is a pretty good ending.

A Court of Wings and Ruin (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3) by Sarah J. Maas

June 24, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

This actually reminded me a lot of the ending to Throne of Glass; I had similar issues with it. But ultimately, this was a pretty good finish to the series. I definitely didn’t like it as much as I liked the second book. It was much messier, structurally. She just really isn’t great in my opinion at writing that end of series final battle book. She relies pretty heavily on deus ex machinas, and a lot of the intimate character growth we got last book […]

Very skeptical going in to this, but I quite enjoyed myself. Thanks, Read Harder!

Orange: The Complete Collection, Vol. 1 by Ichigo Takano

June 24, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

This wasn’t my first manga, but it was the first I enjoyed. I tried Sailor Moon years ago, and was super not into it. In hindsight, I may have been unfair to it, and being unfamiliar with the conventions of manga and anime probably contributed, but still. Not a fan. But I was into this right away! I probably wouldn’t have ever picked it up, despite several friends having read and enjoyed it, except for the Read Harder Challenge this year (thanks Read Harder, doing […]

“The thing is, I mean, there’s times when you look at the universe and you think, ‘What about me?’ and you can just hear the universe replying, ‘Well, what about you?'”

Thief of Time (Discworld, #26) by Terry Pratchett

June 24, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

There wasn’t enough Death in this, but then again, he’s done all his growing already in other books, so that was probably the smart choice. I still really enjoyed it. The actual main characters of this book are Death’s granddaughter, Susan, who has reached the ultimate peak of her badassdom; a history monk named Lu-Tze; and his apprentice, Lobsang. The history monks are cool. They live in this place where Time doesn’t really exist, and their job is to basically monitor history, and in a […]

“For love is no part of the dreamworld. Love belongs to Desire, and Desire is always cruel.”

The Sandman, Vol. 2: The Doll's House by Neil Gaiman

June 20, 2019 by narfna 4 Comments

I didn’t like this one as much as I did the first one, and I don’t think it’s because I read the Kindle version. The whole series is on Kindle Unlimited (the 30th anniversary editions), a service I’m already paying for, so why not try it out in that medium? The formatting on the Kindle version is actually pretty great when you get into the actual comic. The story zooms in on panels and focuses on all the right spots, and it’s big enough to […]

One of the richest women in the world spent her last years living by choice in a series of decrepit hospital rooms.

Empty Mansions: The Mysterious Life of Huguette Clark and the Spending of a Great American Fortune by Bill Dedman & Paul Clark Newell Jr.

June 20, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

This wasn’t as interesting as I’d hoped it would be all the way through, but I’m not unhappy I read it. When he happened upon a mansion newly for sale that had been empty for over sixty years, journalist Bill Dedman was intrigued. The Santa Barbara estate, it turned out, was owned by the Clark family, one of the last remainders of W.A. Clark’s financial empire. Clark had been one of the top four or five richest men in the world in the early 1900s, […]

“Now I think it’s one of the most useless questions an adult can ask a child—What do you want to be when you grow up? As if growing up is finite. As if at some point you become something and that’s the end.”

Becoming by Michelle Obama

June 20, 2019 by narfna 2 Comments

This was a pick for my IRL book club in the spring, and I’m so glad! I don’t know if I ever would have picked it up otherwise, due to my avoidance of both political books and memoirs, unless they come suuuper highly recommended. (Sidenote: I love my IRL book club. It’s like having a bimonthly Galentine’s Day.) Mostly, Michelle Obama is such a good writer! She is t a l e n t e d. Her book also fits into my memoir sweet spot, […]
