How to Talk to Nice English Girls by Gretchen Evans

October 2, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

Another book where I’ve been putting off the review, but this time because I couldn’t work up the energy to talk about it. This was a rec from KJ Charles on Goodreads (she’s a good follow for more eclectic and/or self-pubbed books) and I’m glad I picked it up, but I’m not sure I’ll read any more books by this author. It was solidly in ‘I liked this but meh’ territory. Historical f/f romance is so hard to find, and when I’ve found it, it […]

Third time through, just as great. #CBRBingo – I Love This

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

September 30, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

This book works on multiple levels for me: *It’s swoony and I love the characters. I find it comfortable and reassuring, like a big fluffy blanket. *It’s a smart take on Chosen One stories, upending tropes and challenging expectations. The first time through you think you know what’s going to happen, and then it doesn’t, and something much cooler happens instead. *It’s funny and incisive, and has good things to say about the human emotional cost of magic, of being caught inside a fantasy story. […]

“It does not make sense. It cannot exist. It’s impossible.”

The Subtle Knife (His Dark Materials, #2) by Philip Pullman

September 30, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

“What he couldn’t say was that he longed for his father as a lost child yearns for home. That comparison wouldn’t have occurred to him, because home was the place he kept safe for his mother, not the place others kept safe for him.” As a kid, I was really into this book. I ran across it in the library one day, years after I read the first one. I loved the whole parallel universes jag, and it was undercut with this darkness most of […]

I liked it!

A Prince on Paper (Reluctant Royals, #3) by Alyssa Cole

September 30, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

This is my favorite book in this series by quite a large margin. (Although I haven’t read the second novella yet.) It still wasn’t a perfect read for me, and had a lot of the same problems I felt the others did, but I just loved the characters so much, and unlike in the other books in this series, I never thought their connection felt forced. And aside from how much I liked the two main characters and how well they meshed together, I thought […]

I did not expect to love this book so much, or at all. #CBRBingo – Reader’s Choice

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

September 30, 2019 by narfna 2 Comments

I really, really liked this. I was actually really nervous about this one because I did not like her first book, The Bone Season, when I read it years ago. It was by turns over- and under-written, and to me at least, was obviously written by someone still finding her writing voice. I was hoping that in the future she would write something else that would show her matured talents, and sure enough, that is exactly what happened. What a difference ten years can make […]

I finally tackle the Temeraire series (four months ago). #CBRBingo – And So It Begins

His Majesty's Dragon (Temeraire, #1) by Naomi Novik

September 30, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

This is why I never DNF books. Well, that and the OCD (legit, not just using it facetiously). I had a hard time getting into this (I’ve had a hard time getting into several books the last couple of months–my brain is not wanting to cooperate with me). It took me what felt like weeks to get past the first thirty pages. And it’s not like what was there was bad, I just couldn’t engage myself in it for some reason. Novik styles the book […]
