Good evening, everyone. I'm Leslie Monster, and this is Nightline. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: narfna's Quick Questions interview.)

narfna's Reviews:

Didn’t really work for me, but will give the author a couple more tries. Yes, Malin and Mrs. J, I will be reading #5 next :)

The Perils of Pleasure (Pennyroyal Green, #1) by Julie Anne Long

December 20, 2019 by narfna 2 Comments

This just never really clicked for me. I’m going to try a couple more books by this author and see how it goes, though. I had a good enough time with it, but I never really connected with the characters outside of a handful of moments, and I didn’t think the main couple really connected with each other, either. I also felt the central premise was kind of wasted. It started out pretty great. I like the concept of the feuding families being the center […]

The Magpie Lord (A Charm of Magpies, #1) by K.J. Charles

December 20, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

Really liked this! You can barely tell that this was her first book. It was pretty short, and for the most part that was fine, but there were parts where she sums up conversations instead of showing them, where I wanted her to actually show them. There’s a significant story that Crane tells Stephen about how he got his tattoos, and we don’t get to hear it at all! She also glossed over their initial bonding and friendship. But other than that, this was actually […]

Just a real bummer here, as this first trilogy sputters to a close.

Fire Study (Study, #3) by Maria V. Snyder

December 20, 2019 by narfna 3 Comments

What a bummer of a book. In more than one way! It’s a bummer in that I didn’t like it and it didn’t live up to how good the first one was, and the second to an extent as well. And a bummer because seemingly nothing good ever happens to these characters, only bad things, horrible things, and everyone spends the whole book arguing basically. The plot was also messy as hell. It supposedly focuses on Yelena and Leif, along with Marrok, Moon Man and […]

Not as good as the first; in retrospect, better than the third.

Magic Study (Study, #2) by Maria V. Snyder

December 20, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

I liked this book and enjoyed reading it. I basically read it in a day. I did think it was a little scattered, but that was probably inevitable as Snyder builds up her world, and Yelena isn’t confined to the castle in Ixia anymore. But that does mean that it wasn’t as purely pleasurable as that first book, which was so well constructed and centered. I think this book does manage to avoid second book syndrome. Things I liked: *The worldbuilding in Sitia, Yelena’s homeland, […]

FYI no idea how it happened that I’m reviewing #6 before #5. Goodreads says I read them in that order, too, but I! Did! Not! I! Would! Never!

Hunted (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #6) by Kevin Hearne

December 20, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

This series is still fun, but it’s not my favorite. The last three books especially have been mostly action, with Atticus, Granuaile, and Oberon on the run from the Greek and Roman pantheons. They have to stay alive while trying to figure out how to reach safety, who is passing information from their side to the Olympians, and how they can make peace so they can all just be left alone. A couple of things have me rounding this up from 3.5 stars, even though […]

Double Cannonballing on a re-read.

The Amber Spyglass (His Dark Materials, #3) by Philip Pullman

December 19, 2019 by narfna 4 Comments

Still a four star read for me. Currently kicking myself for not writing this closer to when I finished. As per usual, I have forgotten what I wanted to say about it. I do think this is a good ending to the series. It doesn’t sit well with a lot of people, but I think it’s a fitting ending, for a story about loss of innocence (and how that’s not a bad thing), different kinds of love, and questioning authority. Some disjointed (spoiler-filled) thoughts: * […]
