Good evening, everyone. I'm Leslie Monster, and this is Nightline. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: narfna's Quick Questions interview.)

This one has that Stephen King magic.

The Institute by Stephen King

December 26, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

As readers, I think one thing we all have in common is that every time we pick up a book, we’re hoping it’ll be one of those times where what you’re reading is so absorbing that you forget entirely that you’re reading, your conscious self recedes into the background, and the story just takes over. Those are always the most magical reading experiences for me, at least, and this book, which calls to mind the beginnings of King’s writing career, absolutely did that for me. […]

“From a purely physical standpoint she didn’t have a chance, but her attitude was that death was better than capitulation.”

The Girl Who Played With Fire (Millennium, #2) by Stieg Larsson

December 22, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

This whole re-read  review is chock full of spoilers. I want to talk more about Dragan Armansky’s idea that Lisbeth is the perfect victim. I touched on it in my 2012 review, but it has stayed with me. Everything in this book points to him being right. Lisbeth’s past, and current events involving the triple murders that Lisbeth is blamed and hunted for, they perfectly prime her to be someone who is easily blamed or taken advantage of. The first thing being she doesn’t trust […]

A timely review for a book about Halloween.

Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell & Faith Erin Hicks

December 22, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

Short and sweet 🙂 I really want to go to an effing pumpkin patch now. (I’ve never been! It’s not really a thing in the Southwest.) I actually read this back in September after it was first released, and I read it in about an hour in one sitting as I was drinking some coffee at Barnes & Noble. I didn’t remember much more than my major impressions, so I went ahead and re-read it just now ahead of writing this review. Some impressions: The […]

Seriously, is no one else bothered about there being zero wagers in this book?

The Wallflower Wager (Girl Meets Duke, #3) by Tessa Dare

December 21, 2019 by narfna 2 Comments

Much better than her last book. And for once the hero isn’t a man who thinks he’s broken and thus doesn’t deserve love. She’s played that card way too often. The premise here is that Penny, the titular wallflower who resigned herself to being a spinster ten years before, has a ton of animals in her care, and her family is threatening to move her back to her ancestral home if she doesn’t: a) Get rid of most of the animals, b) Get a new […]

“But if you think there’s a man anywhere who can make me do anything I don’t want to do, you haven’t been paying attention.”

Heaven's Queen (Paradox, #3) by Rachel Bach

December 21, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

Spoilers for this book and some for the first two books as well. This is a 3.5 star series for me, I think. I liked the first book well enough, but the series really didn’t get interesting until midway through book two, when the actual plot started to come out and play. That second book, in a rare occurrence for a trilogy, I think in retrospect was actually the best one of the series. It had the most exciting action, the most believable conflict, and […]

Pretty great second book, once I got into it.

Honor's Knight (Paradox, #2) by Rachel Bach

December 21, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

For me, this book and series are really 3.5 stars. I had SUCH a hard time getting in to this book. I feel like getting through the first fifty pages took me five hundred years, and it was even hard to pick it up in the first place. I don’t know what about it was making me react like that, but it’s not a normal reaction for me, so for that reason alone I can’t give this a full four stars, but I’m rounding up […]
