Good evening, everyone. I'm Leslie Monster, and this is Nightline. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: narfna's Quick Questions interview.)

narfna's Reviews:

This book is going to be so good for so many kids. I wish it had been around when I was growing up.

Rick by Alex Gino

July 7, 2020 by narfna 1 Comment

This is a sweet book, but it’s not as good as its companion novel, the award-winning George. George does what all great books do, and transcends its genre. It was written for young middle grade readers, but because it was so well-written and so personal, and developed the character of Melissa so beautifully, it just felt like a good story, all the while it was also teaching kids about what it means to be trans, and emphasizing themes like empathy, friendship, and kindness. Rick has […]

The Gentleman's Guide to Getting Lucky (Montague Siblings, #1.5) by Mackenzi Lee

July 7, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

I did not expect this to be so uncomfortable! I do not do well with awkward. But it ended sweetly, so I feel better now. This whole novella (which was a two hour listen on audio) centers on Monty worrying about his first time having sex with Percy. Monty is self-conscious about his past sexual exploits, worried about their future, and still harboring some self-hatred that makes it hard for him to understand why Percy would want to be with him. Also, Percy is a […]

“We should be focused on saving the Interdependency from collapse. Instead we’re playing palace intrigues. It’s pointless. It’s wasteful. And it’s going to end in our ruin.”

The Last Emperox (The Interdependency, #3) by John Scalzi

July 7, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

A good ending to the series. This hasn’t been my favorite of Scalzi’s series (I still hold a very fond place in my heart for Old Man’s War), but it was overall a great read. It also takes his usual smart-ass style and amps it up to a thousand. The tongue-in-cheek tone makes for a nice contrast with the serious subject matter, and makes it so that when a character is doing something serious, you feel it more than maybe you would otherwise. I’ve been […]

“He’s been here one hour, but already he feels like he has never lived anywhere else. And even if he doesn’t know who he was … he knows who he is.” #CBRBingo – UnCannon

The City We Became (Great Cities, #1) by N.K. Jemisin

July 7, 2020 by narfna 6 Comments

I feel like I do this every time I read an N.K. Jemisin book. Part of me wants to give it five stars, but I’m going to hold off until I see where it’s going to end up. I did that with The Fifth Season, too. (And I know when I go to do my re-read, I’m going to up that book to five stars.) I feel like every time I read one of her books, she does something that I’ve never seen before. It’s […]

A science heavy debunking of contemporary gender essentialism.

Delusions of Gender: How Our Minds, Society, and Neurosexism Create Difference by Cordelia Fine

July 6, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

I tried to read this book near the beginning of quarantine, in hard copy, and my poor overloaded brain just couldn’t handle it. If I had read this in audio, a format my brain can handle for serious subjects, I probably would have rated it much higher, and gotten through it much faster (and I’ll be honest, retained more than 10% of it). So take this review with a grain of salt. (P.S. I just googled that phrase, and it evolved from something Pliny the […]

This series is like the ideal fantasy college experience. Acceptance and friends and lots of pies.

Check, Please!, Book 2: Sticks & Scones by Ngozi Ukazu

July 6, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

Again, read this in April, don’t remember as well as I should. PSA: Always write your reviews within a week of finishing the book! It doesn’t end well otherwise! (Writing this mostly for future Ashley, who insists on being a total asshole in this regard.) It was cute! I remember that. Bitty and the other hockey bros are a good bunch of people to hang out with for an hour or two (these are very fast reads). And this one, if I’m remembering correctly, had […]
