Good evening, everyone. I'm Leslie Monster, and this is Nightline. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: narfna's Quick Questions interview.)

Two five stars in a row from me for this series. I love it so much!

The Marquis Who Mustn't (Wedgeford Trials, #2) by Courtney Milan

April 21, 2024 by narfna 5 Comments

As often happens with books that I five-star love and gobble up in a mindless pleasure fest of reading indulgently, I am finding it hard to have anything to say beyond BOOK GOOD READ NOW. But let’s try anyway. This is the second book in Courtney Milan’s Wedgeford Trials series, about a small town in Victorian England that is full of mostly Chinese emigrants (as always, the author’s notes are a must-read for historical context) but other members of the Asian diaspora as well. The […]

The Fragile Threads of Power (Threads of Power, #1) by V.E. Schwab

April 18, 2024 by narfna Leave a Comment

I think I may have fallen out of love with V.E. Schwab. I actually DNFed my re-read of the last book in the original Shades of Magic trilogy (!) because I was so uninterested (it was my least favorite the first time through, too). I started this book back in jAnUaRy. JANUARY. And I have only now finished it. And it was fine! While I was reading it I was having a good time, but I never actually felt like picking it back up. I […]

Yes, let the Taylor Swift-lyric title and the beautiful cover lure you in.

Don't Want You Like a Best Friend (Mischief & Matchmaking, #1) by Emma R. Alban

March 25, 2024 by narfna 8 Comments

[finishes book] [three and a half weeks later] I don’t know why I’m having such a mental block about writing this review, so I’m just going to go and see what happens. [two days later] This is an adult queer Regency romance featuring two young women as the protagonists, and it’s the first sapphic historical I think that I have really loved*. There still isn’t that much f/f historical romance or ones involving nb folks to begin with, but the ones I’ve read have not […]

Like Sylvia Plath and the fig tree, basically.

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

March 22, 2024 by narfna Leave a Comment

My initial thoughts upon finishing this were mostly that it was a perfectly fine book but that it wouldn’t stick with me, and that has indeed turned out to be the case. It’s been a month since I’ve finished it, and it’s already almost fallen out of my head completely. But it was a short, entertaining read, so if that’s something you’re looking for, and you can stand some blatant emotional manipulation, this might be the book for you! What the blurb doesn’t tell you […]

“I was happy, but I also wasn’t. Something was missing, here. Or not missing, but sleeping. But nothing here could wake it up. It made me feel alone. I don’t know how else to explain it.”

The Vanished Birds by Simon Jimenez

Well I didn’t finish this in time for book club (it was my pick 😂 ) but I did finish it! And it was excellent. [two and a half months later] Okay, so, I am largely incapable of writing reviews in 2024 it seems, but I wanted to say things about this! Firstly, I am going to lower this down to four stars because in the past two months, it really hasn’t stuck with me as much as I thought it would, the way that […]

Another win from this author!

Where Sleeping Girls Lie by Faridah Abíké Íyímídé

March 22, 2024 by narfna Leave a Comment

Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ARC. It hasn’t affected the content of my review. Don’t go in expecting another thriller like Ace of Spades and you’ll be fine. This is more of a straight mystery than Íyímídé’s debut; it is slower paced and there is both more passing of actual time in the story, and time spent with characters just talking to each other. In a way, it’s a lot more atmospheric than Ace of Spades. It sort of traded in the […]
