Good evening, everyone. I'm Leslie Monster, and this is Nightline. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: narfna's Quick Questions interview.)

“Seriously, my friend’s daughter is constantly misgendered because she favours clothes with dinosaurs on. EVERYONE KNOWS ALL DINOSAURS WERE BOYS AND THAT’S WHY THEY’RE EXTINCT.”

The Gender Games by Juno Dawson

Been sitting on this review for two months now, trying to land on a star rating, and how to articulate what I wanted to say. Ultimately, this is a good book that is part memoir and part feminist/social text about being transgender (with a focus on the UK), with some intersectional feminist ideas thrown in. It’s also written in a very colloquial, humorous style that is very much not the norm for these kinds of books. This is what threw me, because I couldn’t decide […]

Tikka Chance on Me by Suleikha Snyder

September 28, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

For the first half of this book, I was so charmed I was a hair-trigger away from giving this novella five stars. It lessened in its charm in the second half, but overall I still really liked it. The set-up here is really fun, and the tone of it reflects that fun. Pinky works at her parent’s Indian restaurant, and she has been enjoying lusting from afar one of her customers, Trucker, who is unfortunately part of a biker gang. Trucker is also lusting after […]

A romance where the best part isn’t the romance. #CBRBingo – Book Club

One to Watch by Kate Stayman-London

September 28, 2020 by narfna 3 Comments

I liked this a lot, but it felt a bit unfinished in a couple aspects, and I liked the beginning better than the ending. I finally got my book club to read a romance, and it turns out romance wasn’t even the main focus. I should have made them read Beach Read, that would have got them. On the other hand, as much as this book was flawed for me as a romance, as a book about criticizing reality TV and about disrupting the public […]

A steamy romance set amidst a family feud.

Hate to Want You (Forbidden Hearts, #1) by Alisha Rai

September 21, 2020 by narfna 2 Comments

I bought this a couple years back when I found out Alisha Rai was coming to the Tucson Festival of Books and was going to be on several panels I was attending as a volunteer. Since a lot of people I knew had been reading this series and loving it, I figured I’d give it a shot. She actually canceled her appearances at the festival, I never found out why, and I didn’t end up reading the book. Fast forward to 2020, and I’m trying […]

One of the few times I will say to watch the movie first.

Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy

September 21, 2020 by narfna 4 Comments

I probably chose the wrong time to read this one, as so many of my friends like it quite a bit, even ones who don’t like Thomas Hardy as a writer. But it nicely filled a challenge for Read Harder, and because it’s been on my TBR for over a decade, and it was available on SCRIBD, I did it. And I didn’t not like it, I just found it hard to finish, and it never really caught my attention. I missed soooo much while […]

The first book in a historical romance series set during the Scottish Enlightenment.

Provoked (Enlightenment, #1) by Joanna Chambers

September 16, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

I should have read this so much sooner! I’ve owned a Kindle version for years now. I guess I was thinking this was more like your standard “historical” romance, with the focus mostly on the romance, and where history often takes a backseat, or gets a bit imaginary (cough Tessa Dare cough). And don’t get me wrong, I enjoy those types of books often when done well. They are a fluffy good time. But there’s something about the style this book is written in, which […]
