Good evening, everyone. I'm Leslie Monster, and this is Nightline. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: narfna's Quick Questions interview.)

narfna's Reviews:

Didn’t super like this one, but also didn’t give it a fair shake.

The Dragon Republic (The Poppy War, #2) by R.F. Kuang

December 30, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

I’m going to need to re-read this. About 25% in, I gave up on it emotionally and only mostly paid attention to the audio after that. Please take this as really only a review of the first 25% of the audiobook, specifically. Honestly, the reason I need to re-read is because I turned on the audiobook narrator very quickly into this listening experience. I just couldn’t take listening to her anymore. She was overacting the hell out of everything and ruining perfectly good lines, especially […]

“We’re going to try something new.”

Rhythm of War (The Stormlight Archive, #4) by Brandon Sanderson

December 30, 2020 by narfna 3 Comments

What a wonderful book. I don’t know why I’m still surprised at this point at how good a book in this series turned out to be. I love all of these books, but there was something extra-wrenching about this one, as we really start to dig into not only the escalating mythology but the characters’ heads and hearts in ways that are only really possible because Sanderson has spent 3,500 pages before this providing the world’s most epic foundation. This is why I love epic […]

Very satisfying Sherlock Holmes pastiche, with bonus Jack the Ripper.

Dust and Shadow: An Account of the Ripper Killings by Dr. John H. Watson by Lyndsay Faye

December 30, 2020 by narfna 1 Comment

I would not be lying if I say that this is the best Sherlock Holmes novel I’ve ever read, and that’s including the actual Sherlock Holmes novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I have some thoughts about why this is, none moreso than ACD never seemed to love his characters as much as other people did, and the popularity and lovabilty of the character has maintained, even grown in some circles, in the one hundred years since he first appeared in the pages of […]

I guess I just don’t get the “narrative in verse” sensibility.

SHOUT by Laurie Halse Anderson

December 30, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

This three (and a half) star rating is entirely personal preference. I just would prefer that this book was in prose instead of verse. I would nearly always prefer a work be in verse if it is possible. Obviously if your aim is to write poems, individually crafted ones with like, a poetic aim or whatever (I have no idea why poets do what they do) that’s not gonna work. But here, this is a memoir, and while there were several “poems” that worked as […]

A re-read before Rhythm of War.

Oathbringer (The Stormlight Archive, #3) by Brandon Sanderson

December 29, 2020 by narfna 2 Comments

Honestly not sure what I’m about to type, because I don’t want to do a full review. I hadn’t re-read this book since it first came out and I knew I barely remembered it, and even the detailed summaries over on the Coppermind wouldn’t be good enough for to prep for book four. It really helped me when this book came out in 2017 that I had books one and two fresh in my mind from a recent re-read, so I got the audiobook from […]

Jasper Fforde has written a world librarians are basically superheroes.

The Woman Who Died a Lot (Thursday Next, #7) by Jasper Fforde

December 29, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

This wasn’t supposed to be the last book in the Thursday Next series, but it works as a good finale anyway. (Someday we might get Dark Reading Matter? Who knows what Fforde will do next.) I liked this much better than the last one in this series. Actually, I think it’s my favorite in quite some time (not really sure, though, since it’s been so long since I’ve read one through five). I was very relieved at the small presence of the Bookworld. I much […]
