Dune Messiah (Dune, #2) by Frank Herbert

March 26, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

Hoo boy, talk about conflicting thoughts and feelings. This book (at least my edition) starts with an introduction by Frank Herbert’s son, Brian, who has shepherded the world of Dune since his father’s death, co-writing books with Kevin J. Anderson and making sure his father’s stories and legacy are safe. This is nice of him! He clearly admired his father very much. Anyway, in the intro, he posits that Dune Messiah wasn’t nearly as well-received by fans and critics because Herbert does something unique to […]

I would push this book on anyone.

So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo

March 9, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

One of these days I will find a way to successfully and reliably write reviews for books that mean a lot to me, but that is not this day. This day, I’m going to half-ass some things about this awesome book I read last month but have been avoiding reviewing. A thing that I can say with confidence is that the audio version is great. Somehow I’ve never listened to a book narrated by Bahni Turpin before, but she was fantastic, and I hope she […]

“We want somebody to rescue us from other people. From talking to them, I mean, or from the burden of giving a damn about what they say. We don’t want to be polite and stifle our farts, now, do we? We want to let ’em rip and we want to be with someone who won’t care if we do, who will love us regardless and fart right back besides.”

Staked (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #8) by Kevin Hearne

March 2, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

Can I just stop here? I kind of just want to stop here. This will be the last book in this series! What is book nine? I say this because since it was published, the last book in this series (which I have enjoyed greatly!) hasn’t gotten the greatest reviews from my friends and from others. I spoiled myself a little after reading this one and it honestly does sound awful, what happens. Maybe context would help, but it really doesn’t seem like it. And […]

The Project by Courtney Summers

March 2, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

Overall, this was a great book. I read it super fast, and found it very compelling in multiple ways. I did have two pretty big problems with it, though, so it’s not getting that five star rating I thought it might when I was halfway through. This is only my second Courtney Summers book, my first being her previous novel, Sadie, which I liked but didn’t love (I did the audio and thought the production was horrendous, which definitely affected my feelings towards the book). […]

I might just skip straight to the last book, which is about the hero’s dick brother. I’d be interested to see how she humanizes him.

Slightly Married (Bedwyn Saga, #1) by Mary Balogh

March 2, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

About five to six years back, I bought a bunch of “classic” aka popular/former bestseller romance novels at my local used bookstore (and by bunch, I mean around twenty to thirty of them in one go) and have barely touched them since because I am a raccoon who is only attracted to shiny things. Pulled this one out of my TBR Jar, though, early in January, and it did feel nice to finally get around to it. And it was fine! Utterly normal, nothing surprising. […]

Baby’s first cozy mystery. I guess I’m Baby in this metaphor.

Death By Dumpling (A Noodle Shop Mystery, #1) by Vivien Chien

March 2, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

I have slightly mixed feelings on this one, but overall I enjoyed it! I think this might actually be my first true cozy mystery, although I’ve read books that you might stretch to fit into that genre, like the Inspector Gamache books, but the cozy part is only a small part of that series. As far as I understand it, a true “cozy mystery” involves very little stress on the part of the reader, usually takes place in a small town with eccentric villagers, heavily […]
