Good evening, everyone. I'm Leslie Monster, and this is Nightline. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: narfna's Quick Questions interview.)

narfna's Reviews:

A potential answer to a real-life mystery. YMMV!

The Mystery of Mrs. Christie by Marie Benedict

April 6, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

Overall, I enjoyed this one, but I will admit that I was also disappointed by it. I love Agatha Christie, both as a writer and as a historical figure, and her infamous real life disappearance of course fascinates me (as it has many people before me). She never spoke publicly about the eleven days she was missing afterwards, not even in her autobiography, so it’s a mystery history will never solve. It was extremely intriguing, to say the least, that Marie Benedict wanted to offer […]

“There is always a road back. If we have the courage to look for it, and take it. I’m sorry. I was wrong. I don’t know. I need help. These are the signposts. The cardinal directions.”

A Great Reckoning (Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, #12) by Louise Penny

April 6, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

This is one of my favorites in this series so far, right up there with #5 and #9. It gave me everything that I like about this series with very little of what I don’t. A lot of authors by book twelve are just turning the cogs, phoning it in, and things can get stale. Penny at the very least seems to know how to keep things feeling fresh and new, and yet still give you the comfort of returning to check in with the […]

“I think many a trouble begins with love, and it’s important to remember that when life feels like the shit scraped off Death’s boot sole.”

The Paragon Hotel by Lyndsay Faye

April 6, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

I feel like only Lyndsay Faye could not only make me actually sit through reading a story about the mafia, but enjoy it. (Thankfully, the mafia portions are really only about 1/3 of the novel.) I just, I really hate stories about organized crime. I don’t know why. Really, this story isn’t about the mafia. It’s about Alice “Nobody” James, who is on the run from the mafia, yes, but is taken in by the residents of the Paragon Hotel in Portland, Oregon when a […]

I can see why she won the Pulitzer for this, but it wasn’t completely to my tastes.

The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson

April 6, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

I’m really glad I did the audio version for this one, because I’m not sure my raccoon brain (shiny things only!) would have had the patience to sit through it otherwise, and it’s worth sitting through. Robin Miles is, as always, a great narrator. This book wasn’t quite what I was expecting, either. I had actually never learned about the Great Migration in all my many (many) years of school, which is not really surprising, but is disheartening, so I was excited to get into […]

Last Call: A True Story of Love, Lust, and Murder in Queer New York by Elon Green

April 3, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

Thanks to Celadon Books for the ARC! It has not affected the content of my review. I wish I had gotten to this book before publication, but better late than never. I was offered an ARC and accepted gladly, as I’d wanted to read the book anyway. It then arrived weeks late, presumably because the USPS is having some capital ‘I’ Issues right now. The book was worth the wait, though, even if I was sort of unsettled and left a bit unsatisfied at the […]

A semi-disappointing read from an author I usually enjoy.

The Sumage Solution (San Andreas Shifters, #1) by G.L. Carriger

March 26, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

Maybe because this was self-published, but this was one of the most fanficky romance novels I’ve ever read. And that’s not a negative! It was sort of bonkers in the way it just went for it. I liked the first half much better than the second half, though, in that regard. Then it sort of went off the rails at the end. I still enjoyed it, but at least to me, it was obvious this book was self-published. It felt much less polished than other […]
