I love books, and after completing graduate school, I want an excuse to think deeply about them again. Proud granddaughter of multiple cancer survivors and would love to read and write for a cause.

It’s townies versus summer folks in The Last House Guest

The Last House Guest by Megan Miranda

January 28, 2021 by msvreadsbooks 1 Comment

The Last House Guest is a prime example of the female-centered mystery narrative – unexplained tragedy, intense female friendships, and jumping around in time.  A year ago, Sadie Loman was found dead having fallen or jumped off of a cliff by her family’s summer house in Littleport, Maine. She was supposed to attend a party where her best friend, Avery Greer, was waiting for her. A year later, and Avery has not come to terms with the loss. It must be difficult since she works […]

Maiden Voyage with Hercule Poirot

The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie

January 27, 2021 by msvreadsbooks Leave a Comment

Agatha Christie’s first Hercule Poirot book is also my first sojourn into Christie’s oeuvre. I was initially underwhelmed by the novel at first, but in all my reading throughout the years, I’ve come to realize that the “first” or earliest notable version of any genre can seem mediocre because of the people who came after and perfected the form.  The novel as a form is a great example of this – try reading Pamela; or Virtue Rewarded (1740) by Samuel Richardson. It’s one of the […]

An apt metaphor for the gap in educational attainment – The Ninth House

The Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

January 26, 2021 by msvreadsbooks Leave a Comment

Full disclosure: I’m not really a fan of fantasy fiction. When given the choice, I tend to go for moire realistic narratives or historical fiction. That being said, The Ninth House, was an enjoyable read. Or listen, I guess, since I listened to the audiobook with Lauren Fortgang and Michael David Axtell.  The Ninth House begins mid-magical ceremony – a group of students who belong to one of the eight houses at Yale that all channel otherworldly forces for power, money, and success. Galaxy “Alex” […]

The Last Resort – Meh.

The Last Resort by Susi Holliday

January 24, 2021 by msvreadsbooks 5 Comments

This book was fine, but nothing life-changing or super surprising. It reminded me of The Hunger Games and Fantasy Island combined. Also Ten little Indians. A synopsis: 7 strangers find themselves on a plane to a ‘luxury-island adventures though, through focalization of different characters, we learn they’ve each been promised something different. There are also flashbacks to an event maybe 20 years ago, though we don’t know whose story they’re telling. 1. Amelia is a humanitarian worker who is hoping to make money 2. John is […]
