I am a devourer of almost all things pop culture, but especially books. I already make it a goal to read around 150 books yearly, so I figured why not do some good for the world while I do it? I mostly read fiction, with some graphic novels and nonfiction mixed in there for good measure.

These books are almost custom-made for me

In an Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire

January 10, 2019 by MrsLangdonAlger 4 Comments

I always understand and work to remember that everyone has different tastes, but I have to admit I was absolutely baffled when it came to my attention that there are folks out there who don’t enjoy the Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire. And then I remembered that not everyone is me, and while I don’t get it, I accept it. That being said, as I said in the title, these books are practically custom-made for me. Every kid who finds a world in these […]

Both Complex and Accurate

Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny by Kate Manne

January 7, 2019 by MrsLangdonAlger 1 Comment

I’m gonna start by saying that this book made me feel like kind of an idiot the whole time I was reading it. Not in a bad way! It’s just very logical, with philosophical arguments laid out academic-style, and it’s been long enough since my time in school that I had to mentally switch over to that kind of reading style to understand what was being said. Manne is obviously an extremely intelligent person, and while she lays out her arguments clearly, maybe be prepared […]

Brutally Honest

December 14, 2018 by MrsLangdonAlger 2 Comments

Immediate note: I am a white woman, which means of course that I have a ton of privileged and am lacking any real-world experience with racism directed at me or people who look like me. There’s sections of this book I’m just not going to address in this review, because I don’t feel that I’m qualified to. While this book is mostly about the external crisis black men face in a police state interested in oppressing and murdering them, it also addresses issues of internal […]

A Dark Fantasy Metaphor for Internalized Misogyny

December 5, 2018 by MrsLangdonAlger Leave a Comment

I loved this book enough that when I went to add it to my Goodreads list and saw it’s average rating of under 4.0, I was offended on its behalf. How dare other people not love this as much as me? But I get it. It’s a weird, wild read. The central plot is this: three girls live on an island where other teen girls keep mysteriously disappearing. Something sinister and otherworldly is behind this, and they must figure out how to work together to […]

Spent the Whole Book Unsure What to Make of It

December 3, 2018 by MrsLangdonAlger Leave a Comment

Maybe years of reading young adult books, including plenty of dystopian fiction (always trilogies, because nothing is ever allowed to just be one damn book in YA world), has made me unfairly picky about what I consider good young adult dystopian fiction. Maybe I just wasn’t in the mood for this particular story. But I spent the entire time reading this book being unsure what I really thought of it, and by the end could only conclude that this meant it was just mediocre. Which […]

I NEEDED This Book

December 3, 2018 by MrsLangdonAlger Leave a Comment

As I mentioned in my last review, I’m a sober person who does Alcoholics Anonymous. Part of the steps is making amends, and the way my sponsorship network starts that process is by starting a list of resentments and working through our reasons for them and (when applicable) finding where our part of things lies. As a side note, I really appreciate my sponsor because she does not expect us to find fault in cases where we are victimized: she believes (correctly, I think) that […]
