ModernLove's Reviews:

Sometimes Sequels Are Just Unneccesary

January 11, 2016 by ModernLove 7 Comments

I remember reading Me Before You and crying my little eyes out at the end. It was such a beautiful constructed book that let the layers build up until you really felt the emotions the characters were going through. It never felt cheap or manipulative (to me) and so when the end finally came, it was an emotional payoff. When I heard there was going to be a sequel, I was so excited. I couldn’t wait to see where Lou was and how she was dealing […]

This Might Be My Book of the Year

January 9, 2016 by ModernLove 11 Comments

Yesterday I got home from work around 4:30. I was about 300-pages deep into A Little Life and wanted to keep going. Just before midnight, I closed the book. This is a 736 page novel and it was then, amidst the crumpled tissues and empty whiskey glass, that I realized I never even ate dinner. This book had captured me so completely that I sat on my couch for five and a half hours just to finish it. So if you want to know what kind […]

The Girl in the Plastic Bubble

January 8, 2016 by ModernLove Leave a Comment

Welcome to another edition of “Books I keep seeing and thinking I should read, and then finally do”! This one was a Christmas gift from my husband (who was originally going to get me Adele tickets, but lol yeah right, so instead got me books and Captain Marvel and Deadpool shirts. He’s a keeper.) and I pretty much devoured it. Everything, Everything is a fairly easy read and really does go quick. A lot of that is thanks to it’s format, which includes e-mails, IMs, and […]

A New Year, A New Memoir

January 7, 2016 by ModernLove 3 Comments

A new year, a new Cannonball, and I’m sticking with what works for me. I kicked off CBR7 with amemoir, so I figure why not go the same route? This was also a gift from my awesome book exchange gifter, who correctly noted I love memoirs of strong, amazing women who do incredible things. A+ job on this one, Teresa. Now, I must admit that I knew nothing about Carrie’s life before picking up this book. I’ve never listened to Sleater-Kinney, and I watched Portlanida once, but […]

Another Book Exchange, Another Wonderful Book

December 13, 2015 by ModernLove 1 Comment

Once more, Teresaelectro has gifted me with a wonderful book for the CBR book exchange!  And nailed it. A memoir? Check. A strong, kickass female voice? Check. A book that I’ve always seen and gone “huh, I should probably read that”? Check! I am super stoked to dig into this and I can’t thank you enough for this wonderful gift.

What We Need to Get By (CANNONBALL!)

November 5, 2015 by ModernLove 24 Comments

I’ve done it. I have found the perfect book, and I have reached the goal. 52 books read and reviewed in just over 10 months, and boy, am I hitting this milestone with a dozy. This is absolutely a contender for Book of the Year.  Lies We Tell Ourselves is a book about desegregation in 1959 Virginia. It’s a book about accepting who we are and realizing that sometimes we are so much more important that we think. It’s a book about challenging the views that […]
