As previously evidenced, I really love Anthony Bourdain. I think he’s an excellent TV personality, a good writer, and by all accounts a decent cook. I read his books out of order, but that didn’t seem to take away from anything. Kitchen Confidential was everything I wanted it to be. Straight-forward (as much as any memoir is, I suppose), lurid, profane, and yet somehow elegant. Bourdain has such a distinctive voice, be in in television or writing, and there’s no question of ghostwriters other autobiographies may raise. […]
Holiday Love Stories to Make Feel You Warm and Fuzzy
I love Stephanie Perkins. Seriously, in my eyes she can do no wrong. In fact (spoiler alert), one of you may be getting a book by her for Christmas this year. Ahem. When I first read that she was editing a collection of romantic holiday-themed short stories, I was thrilled. And then I read the author list and pretty much camped out at the bookstore waiting for it to show up. And you know what? I wasn’t disappointed. These twelve stories all center around relationships […]
Since You’ve Been Gone: Music, Friendship, Romance.
Things that I love: YA literature, imperfect relationships, really good playlists, a road trip. Things Since You’ve Been Gone has: YA story telling, imperfect relationships, really good playlists, a road trip. It’s safe to assume I really liked this book. It was an impulse buy. I was having a bad day last week and wanted to cheer myself up. I really enjoyed Matson’s book Amy and Rodger’s Epic Detour so I figured, why not? It was a rare move of brilliance on my end. While some could […]
Petals of Blood: Feminism in Post-Colonial Kenya
Another installment of ModernLove takes an African Lit class! This was one of the earlier books we read over the course of the…course, and it’s one that while I reading it, I didn’t like, but once I was done and able to look back at the story as a whole, I really appreciated. The story takes place in Kenya just after it’s liberation from British rule. It’s set mostly in a small village, and the four main characters are not natives of it. They’ve found […]
Palace Walk: The Dual Nature of Everything
I wear many hats. Employee (two places), wife, dog owner, and one of the most important ones, student. About three and a half years ago, I decided to go back to school and get my degree. It’s been a struggle trying to manage my time and not get burned out. It’s also been an incredible experience, knowing what I want to do and going after it like this. I’ve never understood the push to go to university right out of high school, but that’s a […]
Amy Poehler is basically perfect.
I have been slacking. I’ve been slacking big time. A large part of that is due to a lit class that required me to read 7 novels in 7 weeks and effectively burned me out on reading, period. I should probably review those, but frankly, they were pretty boring books that I don’t want to think about. Instead, I give you my palate cleanser. I love Amy Poehler. I loved her on SNL, I love her on Parks and Rec. I think she’s hilarious, smart, […]
