The only reason I read so much is because Cannonball Read has gamified reading and because I hate losing. Give me a fantasy novel with a unique magical system, and I'm happy. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Mobius_Walker's Quick Questions interview.)

Gorman demonstrates that she’s not a one-hit wonder

Call Us What We Carry by Amanda Gorman

April 24, 2022 by Mobius_Walker 5 Comments

Okay, y’all, new job stress is real, and that stress has absolutely sucked all the energy and time out of me to read books, but I’m back! And what a book to read to reinvigorate myself! Like a lot of people, I absolutely fell in love with Gorman’s skill and voice when she recited her poem “The Hill We Climb” at President Biden’s inauguration. In her first collection of poems Call Us What We Carry, Gorman demonstrates that her first presentation to the world was not […]

Death can’t stop any of these characters

Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune

February 22, 2022 by Mobius_Walker Leave a Comment

TW for this review and the book: murder, suicide, discussion of death of both people and pets. Author TJ Klune also includes a similar warning at the very beginning of the book which I greatly admire. Maybe it’s age. Maybe it’s reading more. Maybe it’s just accepting my own emotions, but Cannonball Read has made a liar out of me. Books never used to make me cry. Rarely even tear up. I would feel things, sure. But not cry. That was a response strictly reserved […]

So maybe we shouldn’t go exploring abandoned Swedish mining towns!

The Lost Village by Camilla Sten

February 19, 2022 by Mobius_Walker 1 Comment

[Not discussed in this review but in the book itself. TW: abuse of a differently abled person, implied rape] A group of documentarians go to an abandoned village in Sweden. The lead on the project, Alice Lindstedt, wants to uncover the dark history of this little town, as her grandmother’s family was a part of the citizens that disappeared one day without a trace. But when they arrive odd things start occurring. At first it’s just mysterious figures standing in the distance and missing items. […]

Structure over substance

Long Division by Kiese Laymon

February 15, 2022 by Mobius_Walker Leave a Comment

I’m going to be really honest with y’all. I picked this book up for cover and description of hte structure alone. But I mean, come on. That’s an intriguing and beautiful cover. And as for the structure: this novel is told in two books. Book 1 is read like a normal book, from the front to about halfway through. To read Book 2, the reader has to turn the book over to the back and read from the back cover as if it’s the front. […]

Why has it taken me this long to read this masterpiece?

Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler

February 15, 2022 by Mobius_Walker 1 Comment

The country is on the brink of anarchy. Technically, there are still local, state, and federal governments but they aren’t able to handle many if any of the nation’s problems. Unemployment, homelessness, illness, drug abuse are all rampant. Because of these woes, individuals frequently turn to drugs and/or violence to try and solve their problems. But for 18 year old Lauren, her family, and her cul-de-sac, they turn to each other. They have walled off their road and turn to each other for protection and […]

A break from the norm, but everything is too rushed

The Magicians: New Class by Lilah Sturges

February 14, 2022 by Mobius_Walker Leave a Comment

A group of hedge witches are being enrolled at Brakebills as third year students much to the dismay of the students who have been studying at Brakebills since year one. There’s obvious tension between the hedge witches and the Brakebills students, but they’re being forced to work and study together. Initially they’re told it’s to bridge the gap between the two magical worlds, but the students soon learn the truth. They will be learning battle magic, an outlawed practice, in order to be prepared for […]
