The only reason I read so much is because Cannonball Read has gamified reading and because I hate losing. Give me a fantasy novel with a unique magical system, and I'm happy. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Mobius_Walker's Quick Questions interview.)

It makes sense that my US History teacher would love this book so much

The Eight by Katherine Neville

August 25, 2020 by Mobius_Walker 2 Comments

One of the last things I did before graduating high school in 2009 was to ask all my favorite teachers what their favorite novels were. My US History teacher said that the book she goes back to over and over is The Eight by Katherine Neville. This book has been on my TBR list since then but I have never gotten around to reading it. I can finally take it off that list. This book is expansive. From 18th Century nuns to 20th computer experts, […]

An easy transition to Tarot

Exploring Tarot Using Radiant Rider-Waite by Avia Venefica

August 24, 2020 by Mobius_Walker Leave a Comment

I recently bought this book and Tarot card deck box set. The cards themselves are beautifully illustrated and colored. However, I’m here to review the book. Venefica starts with a history of Tarot and a brief introduction to how the Tarot deck works. Venefica then dips into a glossary and overview of larger symbology. She does a great job of laying the foundation of exploration of the cards in depth through the book. Each explanation is easy to understand and doesn’t overload the reader with […]

If you dive deep enough, physics borders on the supernatural

Interference by Brad Parks

August 23, 2020 by Mobius_Walker Leave a Comment

I picked up Interference as part of Kindle Unlimited Book Club. Matt Bronik, tenured physicist professor and researcher at Dartmouth, is sick and no one knows why. He is taken to the hospital twice for his fits and the doctors have no possible explanation for what might be causing his illness. On his third set of fits, Bronik is kidnapped. At the center of the manhunt for Professor Bronik are his wife Brigid, Detective Emmett Webster, and billionaire investor Sean Plottner. Author Brad Parks jumps around […]

I was prepared to eye-roll through this entire thing– I couldn’t put it down though

Tarot Academy 1: Spells of Iron and Bone by Sarah Piper

August 23, 2020 by Mobius_Walker Leave a Comment

Magic is real, and the world knows it. Unfortunately for the witches and mages, magick is also illegal, and Stevie just performed powerful magick on a non-magical person. Powerful enough that he died. Stevie must now go into hiding at the magical academy that previously threw out her parents for their heretical views. When she arrives at the academy she starts her journey to master her magick (which is largely based on the Tarot) in order to complete the work that her mother started and […]

These books are my Fillory and Further

The Magician's Land by Lev Grossman

August 13, 2020 by Mobius_Walker Leave a Comment

Quentin is ousted from Fillory and finds himself working for money in magic’s seedy underbelly. Thus begins the conclusion of The Magicians trilogy at the start of The Magician’s Land. What starts out as a job involving some not-so-petty theft quickly turns in to another quest to save Fillory. The book itself feels very much like a quest as the trilogy so far as described quests: kind of meandering at the beginning without a lot of direction until every snaps plainly into focus and all of […]

I’m not 100% sure of everything I read but I loved every second of it

On Earth, We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong

August 8, 2020 by Mobius_Walker Leave a Comment

On Earth, We’re Briefly Gorgeous is a letter from a son, named Little Dog, to his illiterate mother. The majority of the letter deals with Little Dog coming to terms with and making sense of his life and the lives of his mother and grandmother. He tells his memory of events from childhood all the way through college graduation. The letter is an attempt for him, a gay, college-educated, young man to bridge the gap between who he is and his family, specifically his mother, […]
