I read to escape and to be entertained for awhile. My main choice is historical mysteries, with a side of supernatural. I don't want any part of dystopian books, or depressing reality tales - there is quite enough of that in the news these days! I'm a social media failure - I don't tweet, Instagram, Tumblr or Facebook - who has the time when there's books to read?

Adventures in magic

February 20, 2018 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

This review covers book 1 & 2 of the Magisterium series, which is another spin on the magician schooling of young people.  It comes with the inevitable comparisons to Harry Potter, but other than having two boys and a girl as the main characters, there’s not a lot that is similar (at least in my eyes). The Iron Trial introduces us to Callum Hunt, who really has no desire to become a magician, or mage, as they call it.  His father has in fact insisted […]

Becoming a Bright Young Thing

February 12, 2018 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

This book is set in the late 1920s in Britain, the era of the Bright Young Things who were rich and titled and carefree.  Our heroine, Rachel Woodley, however is none of those things.  At the start of the book, she is working as a governess to a trio of children in Paris and receives a telegram informing her that her mother is at death’s door.  Due to the fact she rebuffed the advances of one of her co-workers, he delayed passing along the telegram […]

A Gilded Age mystery

February 6, 2018 by Mikki Blu 2 Comments

From New York Times bestselling author, Lauren Willig, comes this scandalous novel set in the Gilded Age, full of family secrets, affairs, and even murder. This book is a mixture of historical romance with an intriguing plot of family secrets and mystery that is very well done.  It’s set at the end of the 1800’s, in the wealthy environs of New York society where rigid rules of appearance were adhered to.  Bayard and Annabelle Van Duyvil are the glamorous couple that appear to have it […]

Friends to lovers

January 31, 2018 by Mikki Blu 2 Comments

This is book three and the last installment in the Blackshear series, with the focus on Nick.  First of all I have to agree with Narfna – the cover model is so far removed from what I imagine Nick would look like.  As a barrister in London, he would definitely not be the bronzed weight lifter type! Once again, Ms Grant has written a rather unlikeable heroine in Kate Westbrook; a young woman not as experienced in the ways of the world as Martha and […]

This was just bad

January 29, 2018 by Mikki Blu 2 Comments

This book has to be one of the worst I’ve read in a long time – I almost didn’t want to review it, but it’s one of those that you can hate review so easily I couldn’t resist. The premise of this book sounded promising: Las Vegas is a city of contradictions: seedy and glamorous, secretive and wild, Vegas attracts people of all kinds–especially those with a secret to hide, or a life to leave behind. It’s the perfect location for Lester Olsen’s lucrative business. […]

You’ve got sin in your blood

January 25, 2018 by Mikki Blu 2 Comments

This is book two in the Blackshear Family series, and follows shortly after the ending of the first book.  Once again, Ms Grant has ventured into unconventional territory with the heroine of the story who is a courtesan and former prostitute.  I know that Loretta Chase has written one book with a courtesan, but that character wasn’t still involved with another man the way Lydia Slaughter is here.  Lydia is a young woman who had to make her own way in the world, which meant […]
