I read to escape and to be entertained for awhile. My main choice is historical mysteries, with a side of supernatural. I don't want any part of dystopian books, or depressing reality tales - there is quite enough of that in the news these days! I'm a social media failure - I don't tweet, Instagram, Tumblr or Facebook - who has the time when there's books to read?

A death in winter

April 17, 2018 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

Finally, after what seemed like forever, I received the new Sebastian St Cyr novel, and devoured it all too quickly.  Once again, Ms Harris has written a fantastic historical mystery that is detailed and entertaining.  This is book 13 in the series, and while a person could read it as a stand alone, you really shouldn’t.  There’s a lot of personal backstory between Sebastian and his wife, Hero, along with the cast of regulars that adds to the story. This one begins, as usual, with […]

What happens at Vega’s….

April 12, 2018 by Mikki Blu 1 Comment

So this is a fairly standard historical romance, the first in a new series by Ms Linden – The Wagers of Sin.  I feel like I’ve read several books lately with a similar premise – young, beautiful woman is left nearly destitute after the death of loved ones, and seeks to make a fortune by gambling.  And in the course of this gambling, she meets handsome, wealthy lord who falls into lust with her and must have her. In this case, we have Sophie Graham, […]

A Scot and his wolf return home

March 28, 2018 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

This is another book with a long lost hero, though in this case it was his own choice to disappear.  This book, third in the No Ordinary Hero series by Suzanne Enoch, is set in Scotland where Callum MacCreath discovers that his older brother Ian, Earl of Geiry, is set to marry Rebecca, a childhood friend.  While Callum isn’t exactly ready to settle down himself, he realizes that he wants Rebecca and confronts her about it.  A family fight ensues, and Callum finds himself shunned […]

Back from the dead, the earl seeks vengeance

March 28, 2018 by Mikki Blu 1 Comment

This book is the latest in the Rules for the Reckless series, though it’s very easy to read as a stand alone.  It is linked somewhat to Ms Duran’s debut book, The Duke of Shadows, which I read last year but completely forgot about for the most part until the end of this one.  So whether that’s good or bad, I’m not sure, take it as you will. This is the tale of Liam Devaliant, Earl of Lockwood, who mysteriously disappeared on his wedding night […]

The Scientist Duke

March 20, 2018 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

Society’s most coveted duke finds the one thing wealth and position cannot buy—the perfect partner… This is apparently the second book in The Duke Trilogy, but you’d be hard pressed to know that other than the title.  I didn’t read the first one (The Scottish Duke), and there was no mention of previous characters or plots.  The duke in question here is Jordan Hamilton, Duke of Roth – a second son who inherited the title after the deaths of his father and older brother (a […]

No fever here, just a low grade fizzle

March 15, 2018 by Mikki Blu 1 Comment

This book was not what I expected, and I didn’t really enjoy it.  I have no issue with reading about fairies, or vampires, or other mythical beings but this book didn’t do it for me and I blame it all on the heroine (who narrates this tale).   Well, I also didn’t care for the hero much either, which doesn’t leave a whole lot for reading enjoyment.  Perhaps if the plot had been more interesting…but alas, that was lacking too. MacKayla (Mac) Lane had been […]
