This is the latest in the Maiden Lane series; a series that deals with both aristocrats and lower classes. The hero of this book belongs to the latter. Asa Makepeace is the owner of Harte’s Folly, a theatre/pleasure garden that burnt to ground at the end of one of the other books. He is determined to bring it back to life, with the financial backing of Valentine Napier, Duke of Montgomery. However, he hasn’t exactly been the best at keeping track of expenditures, and ignored […]
Not a good road trip
This was another book I was anticipating, as Sarah Maclean is another of my favorite authors, and it’s another book that hasn’t lived up to my expectations. This is supposed to be a road trip romance, crossed with a take on the scandalous lives of a family of sisters in the mold of the Kardashians of the Regency set. After all, their names all start with the same letter, S…which I can’t be bothered to remember at this point. Sophie Talbot is the ‘unfun’ sister, […]
Cold Hearted Duke
This is the first book in the Mistress Trilogy, but the events occur after the prequel of ‘The Secret Mistress’ which I reviewed previously. I think the rake in this book is more along the lines of what Lisa Kleypas was aiming for in ‘Cold Hearted Rake’. Jocelyn Dudley, the Duke of Tresham comes across very strongly in the opening chapter of this book. He’s every inch the arrogant, entitled, rakish scoundrel from the top of his head to the tips of his polished Hessians, […]
Dukes prefer dressmakers
This is a re-read for me while I await the newest Loretta Chase book, “Dukes Prefer Blondes” from the library. I thought it would be a good idea to read the start of the Dressmaker Series again to refresh my memory of the characters. I remembered enjoying this book when I read it originally, and it held up as being as good as the first time. Loretta Chase has maintained the thrill of romance more so than many others. In this book, Marcelline Noirot and […]
This isn’t the usual ‘reform a rake’ story
The last couple books I’ve read involved a wicked rake as the hero of the story, so this book is a departure from that. I’ve not read a lot of Mary Balogh, but I picked this one up on a whim at the library when I couldn’t find much in the new releases section. It’s a prequel to a couple of other books, which I haven’t read, but I don’t think that really made a difference. The heroine is Angeline Dudley, a young lady on […]
You deserve somebody better girl
Lisa Kleypas has written so many books that I loved that maybe I was anticipating this one too much! It didn’t live up to my lofty expectations. Not that it was colossally bad, but my attention wandered as I read, I found myself skimming parts, and the romance I expected was lack luster. Devon Ravenel is the rake of this story, and as rakes are wont to do he enjoys his life of wine, women and debauchery. Then his cousin dies, leaving him with an […]
