I read to escape and to be entertained for awhile. My main choice is historical mysteries, with a side of supernatural. I don't want any part of dystopian books, or depressing reality tales - there is quite enough of that in the news these days! I'm a social media failure - I don't tweet, Instagram, Tumblr or Facebook - who has the time when there's books to read?

Introducing your new favorite crime solving duo

Fortune Favors the Dead by Stephen Spotswood

January 26, 2022 by Mikki Blu 3 Comments

Introducing Pentecost and Parker, two unconventional female detectives who couldn’t care less about playing by the rules, in their cases and in their lives. Well, here we are in 2022 and this book starts off in 1942 New York.  Willowjean, aka Will, Parker is a young woman who works in the circus as a Jill-of-all trades.  When the book opens, she’s picking up extra work doing guard duty at a construction site.  As fortune has it, she saves the life of an older woman who […]

Down the rabbit hole

White Rabbit by Caleb Roehrig

March 26, 2019 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

Per the book blurb: Rufus Holt is having the worst night of his life. It begins with the reappearance of his ex-boyfriend, Sebastian—the guy who stomped his heart out like a spent cigarette. Just as Rufus is getting ready to move on, Sebastian turns up out of the blue, saying they need to “talk.” Things couldn’t get worse, right? After finishing Death Prefers Blondes by Caleb Roehrig, I was intrigued enough to check out his previous books.  This is another YA book, but the tone […]

“As it turned out, a pissed-off drag queen with a grappling hook was a force to be reckoned with.”

Death Prefers Blondes by Caleb Roehrig

March 5, 2019 by Mikki Blu 5 Comments

This book was featured on the GFY website, highly recommended by the Fug Girls, where it was touted as a cross between Alias and RuPaul’s Drag Race.  That comparison alone made me take notice!  As per the blurb:  Teenage socialite Margo Manning leads a dangerous double life. By day, she dodges the paparazzi while soaking up California sunshine. By night, however, she dodges security cameras and armed guards, pulling off high-stakes cat burglaries with a team of flamboyant young men. In and out of disguise, she’s in […]

Still marooned in 1815 with murder afoot

A Twist in Time by Julie McElwain

February 19, 2019 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

This is book two in the Kendra Donovan series, where the heroine has travelled back to Regency London through some sort of wormhole (that part really isn’t explained).  I reviewed the first book earlier this year, and found it to be decent enough to give this one a go.  You definitely need to be willing to suspend belief when reading these books, however, because they really are wallpaper historicals.  Kendra is an FBI agent from the 21st century who found herself dropped back in time […]

A shipboard romance that could have been better

The Other Miss Bridgerton by Julia Quinn

February 13, 2019 by Mikki Blu 4 Comments

Oh, I have loved many of Julia Quinn’s books, and adored the Bridgerton saga but I have to say it’s time to let go of that family.  This is the third book in the Rokesby’s series, and much like the first two, this one just didn’t do it for me.  I guess I was hoping that this one was better!  Poppy Bridgerton is the heroine of this one, and is a typical spunky gal who hasn’t been courted and has no marriage prospects despite being […]

A story of two Hollywood legends

The Girls in the Picture by Melanie Benjamin

February 12, 2019 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

This is another fictionalized book about real people by Ms Benjamin (who wrote “The Swans of Fifth Avenue”) – and it’s an intriguing read!  I’m sure we all have the basic knowledge of Mary Pickford who was America’s sweetheart, the “girl with the curls” who married Douglas Fairbanks Sr. and lived the glamorous star life.  What I didn’t know is that there was another woman from that era who was also forging a path for herself in a man’s world – Frances Marion, a writer […]
