I read to escape and to be entertained for awhile. My main choice is historical mysteries, with a side of supernatural. I don't want any part of dystopian books, or depressing reality tales - there is quite enough of that in the news these days! I'm a social media failure - I don't tweet, Instagram, Tumblr or Facebook - who has the time when there's books to read?

A Stitch in Time by Kelley Armstrong

A Twist of Fate by Kelley Armstrong

April 5, 2022 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

I’ve delved into the world of Kelley Armstrong lately – she’s got a lot of books out there!  These are the latest she’s put out, and quite different from most of her work, which features witches, werewolves and other mystical beings.  This series is part Gothic, part time travel, part romance, part paranormal. A Stitch in Time This starts the trilogy, with Bronwyn Dale as the heroine who discovered at a young age that she could time slip back two centuries, where she played with […]

Another rogue bites the dust

The Good Girl's Guide to Rakes by Eva Leigh

March 11, 2022 by Mikki Blu 1 Comment

I haven’t read much historical romance lately, and after reading this one I may not again for awhile.  I’d forgotten how formulaic a lot of these books are now, especially by authors that churn out several in a short time.  I really enjoyed Eva Leigh’s earlier books in this genre, but this one was rather predictable.  The basic plot is that three male friends, (who are, of course, hedonistic bachelors who have no real desire to settle down) must find suitable respectable women to marry […]

A juicy gossipy fiction about old Hollywood

Scandal in Babylon by Barbara Hambly

February 23, 2022 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

This book was entertaining.  Set in 1924 in Hollywood, amidst the glitz and glamour of old Tinseltown in it’s glory days, we are plunged into the story fairly quickly.  Emma Blackstone has come to the U.S. to be an assistant of sorts to her famous sister-in-law Kitty Flint, star of the movie being filmed.  Emma lost her husband in the war, and was in need of somewhere to live when Kitty swooped in to help.  Now Emma finds herself on a movie set, keeping an […]

Revenge is a dish served up by witches

Payback's a Witch by Lana Harper

February 16, 2022 by Mikki Blu 2 Comments

“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina meets The L Word in this fresh, sizzling rom-com by Lana Harper.” This book is a blend of a lot of different elements – it’s paranormal, mixed with payback on a cheating ex boyfriend, a dash of Harry Potteresque wizard tournament and sizzle of a new lesbian romance.  The main character, Emmy Harlow, is a witch but because she left her home town after high school, her powers are diminished.  You see, her home town of Thistle Grove is a place […]

“You cannot be betrayed by someone you do not trust.”

The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner

February 15, 2022 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

This cover is gorgeous!  It may have sucked me into checking this out, but I stayed for the story.  This is one of those books that jumps from present time back to a point in history.  I’ve read several of these; it’s a popular theme that usually involves distant relatives.  However, in this case, it’s a young woman, Caroline Parcewell, in present day who finds out her husband has cheated on her, and she takes off to London on what was supposed to be the […]

This series is not for me

Still Life by Louise Penny

January 30, 2022 by Mikki Blu 1 Comment

Hoo boy…after the high of the previous book I reviewed, this one took a hard turn into disappointment.  It should have been everything I like in a book – a no-nonsense detective, mysterious death, some quirky characters who may or may not be the perpetrator of the crime.  It’s even set in small town Quebec – I’m Canadian, this should be great!  Even most of the reviews were glowing, and as the first book in a series I hoped to be able to settle into […]
