Watson and Holmes Sitting in a Tree? Maybe…Maybe not.

February 27, 2017 by Melina 1 Comment

Let me start by saying that A Study in Charlotte was one of my favorite books that I read last year (or the year before…whenever I read it).  The conceit is that Sherlock Holmes and John Watson were real people and their descendants share the qualities of their famous relatives as they are molded and shaped into “who they’re supposed to be”.  A Study in Charlotte had us meeting Jamie Watson and Charlotte Holmes at boarding school and working through their first case together.  I […]

Never Doubt Rainbow Rowell…OR Scootsa1000!

February 15, 2017 by Melina 2 Comments

First, you should probably go read Scootsa1000’s review here…because her review made me want to read the book–and what if I don’t do as good of a job? Then you’ll be missing out on a great book recommended by Rainbow Rowel AND Scootsa1000!  I don’t want that on my conscience. Ok.  I’ll start here. I loved this book.  If that were enough, that’s all I would say.  But I’ll say a little more.  Have you ever read the Ice Storm where you know everything is […]

You Really Shouldn’t Share Mascara…That’s My Takeaway From All of This

February 10, 2017 by Melina Leave a Comment

This book keeps popping up on book lists everywhere and then someone in our book club picked it, but then changed her mind to have us read Just Mercy  instead (this was last year which is why I don’t have a review for it).  But…I had already purchased the book and so I decided that eventually I would get to it. After reading The Kind Worth Killing I realized that I’ve been missing suspense and mystery in my life.  Soooo…I turned to The Woman […]

Maybe You’re A Virgin Because You’re A Jerk?

January 30, 2017 by Melina Leave a Comment

I’ll just start this off by saying that I didn’t like this book…at all.  I was sucked in by Amazon’s statement, “for readers of Rainbow Rowell and Maria Semple” who like offbeat characters and subtle humor or some such nonsense.  It’s 100% not funny.  Not even once did I giggle or even crack a smile while reading this book.  No, dear friends, do not fall for this at all because it’s simply not true, the main character is not funny–she’s a nightmare and nothing she’s […]

Chaos Club Reigns Supreme

January 27, 2017 by Melina Leave a Comment

One of my students recommended Don’t Get Caught to me and said it was pretty great.  I’ll say that it was pretty ok. I enjoyed it well enough but I’m definitely not quite the audience for it anymore. I guarantee that had I read this in high school that I would’ve tried to start my own Chaos Club myself…but now? Not so much.  Here’s some basic plot stuff: Max is pretty much a blend in kind of guy which is kind of good (he doesn’t […]

Sarcastic Kids are Good Kids

January 27, 2017 by Melina Leave a Comment

My son Tommy and I just finished reading Crimebiters 2 together and it was pretty cute.  I was always partial to Nancy Drew, The Charisma series (girl spies! who are models! and can do cool stuff!) and  (The New) Encyclopedia Brown books (now very old because I am very old) when I was a kid because I have always liked a good mystery.  My son seems to enjoy a good mystery too because he brought this book home from his book fair along with […]
