What Alice Forgot is a very claustrophobic novel, in that it feels like a tight enclosed space with very little air to breathe. I was never quite sure if I wanted Alice to regain her memory, and thus return to the rather horrible woman we learn she has become from her family and friends but also never really knowing her children and why she became who she became. It is an interesting look at memories and how they shape us, while also being a novel […]
“Say ‘Nevermore,'” said Shadow.
This was my second time through American Gods, I have been wanting to re-read it before watching the Starz adaptation and a friend handed me his book and asked me if I wanted it. I said yes, because that means I did not have to search for my copy of it. I enjoyed the book a lot, and I liked knowing how some story lines ended because it upped the creep factor. So, because I know that there are people who have not heard of […]
Midwestern Magical
Deborah Coates skyrocketed to the list of authors I will always read when I read her debut novel, Wide Open, in 2013. A western Urban Fantasy managed to perfectly capture the feeling of the American Northwest. My dad’s side are ranchers in Montana, and I spent a lot of time there on my grandparent’s ranch when I was growing up. Reading Wide Open was just a little bit like being back on the ranch, despite being set in South Dakota. Since that time, I have […]
Am I the only species in creation that doesn’t thrive on conflict?
I’m still not quite sure if I enjoyed this book or not. It’s fine, but for the large majority of the book I just thought it was OK. I feel almost guilty for saying that, because the book is just so nice, but that’s kind of all that it is. Ironically, I’ve been saying that I want light and fluffy fiction, nothing too deep or heavy, and yet when presented with one of the lightest and fluffiest books I’ve come across in a long while […]
Another Day Older and Deeper in Debt
This is a noir, cyber-punk, mystery and has a lot of great ideas jammed into it, but I don’t think the execution is quite there. Ashby does play a bit with the noir tropes, reversing roles and changing the tone to be a bit more humorous and I liked that quite a bit, however there’s just so much in the novel that nothing really gets done well. There are a lot of characters, a lot of plot, and a lot of genres all fighting for […]
Western Weird and Wild
I really like the western genre, and the genre subdivision weird western, so when MsWas sent an email offering this collection of short stories I jumped on it. This book has been on my radar for a while, and I was super excited to read it. Overall, I quite liked it and found it to be a pretty good collection. Not all stories fell into my personal preference, but they were mostly fairly enjoyable. I wasn’t as fond of the stories with a science fiction […]
