I like books, but I'm SUPER picky about them. To clarify- a three star rating means that I liked the book and found nothing objectionable in it. As 3 is the average between 1 and 5 this means the book is an average read, perfectly competent but not outstanding.

It Left Me On a Jet Plane

July 12, 2017 by melanir 2 Comments

I lost this book on the airplane about halfway through reading it and couldn’t be bothered to retrieve it. See, I had put it down to get water or arrange something in my carryon bag and it slipped down between the wall of the plane and my seat in such a way that I couldn’t easily get to it*. I just didn’t care enough to stay on the plane in order to get it back. It’s fine, I guess, but it’s hardly Moriarty’s best work, […]

But I miss those hills with the windy pines

June 28, 2017 by melanir Leave a Comment

This was the June pick for Sword and Laser book club and I only picked it up because of that. I had some strong reservations about the book when I first looked at it a year or so ago and decided not to read it because of that. However, book clubs don’t always pick books that you want to read and I thought I’d give it a try. Unfortunately, the book did not alleviate those reservations. I don’t know, maybe I’m just super grumpy because […]

I Slam The Door But Watch What I Say

June 26, 2017 by melanir 4 Comments

Down and Among the Sticks and Stones by Seanan McGuire is a prequel to Every Heart A Doorway, which I loved, however it is definitely the weaker novel and suffers quite a bit in comparison. I wanted to like this book, but I just didn’t. This book follows Jack and Jill, who were secondary characters in EHAD, and tells the story of how they found their doorway and what lay behind it. They travelled to a fairy world that inspired Victorian monster novels, a place […]

I’m Haunted By the Lives That Wove the Web

June 23, 2017 by melanir Leave a Comment

I want to say that I enjoyed this novel more than I did, as it is I waver between two and three stars in rating this. I liked the concept well enough, but that wasn’t quite enough to cover the writing flaws. Ghost Bride is the June pick for the Vaginal Fantasy book club, and honestly I think it’s kind of a weird pick. Although the story contains a romance, it isn’t a love story. I mean, I definitely tend to prefer stories that contain […]

Stars Without a Cause

June 13, 2017 by melanir 1 Comment

I can’t remember if this was a choice for the July book club, but I know I bought it at the same time. It was either an option that I wanted to read, or a “people who bought this book also liked…” option. Those things reel me in every time. It’s an interesting read, though I suspect people who know more about classic (1900-1950’s) Hollywood are going to find it a fairly dull re-tread. For the most part Petersen simply retells some of the scandals […]

This is Jezebel in Hell

June 7, 2017 by melanir Leave a Comment

The Refrigerator Monologues by Catherynne M. Valente is a super meta, feminist, hilariously sarcastic novella about women in comic books. I’ve said before that Valente can be hit or miss with me, I love her and even the misses are still fantastic but sometimes her books don’t resonate with me. This one though? This one I devoured and I am considering going back for a second helping. It’s… great. If I’m really honest, it’s probably more of a four and a half star read (partly […]
