My first CBR was 2021. It was COVID and I was reading and determined to do something with the time. Two years now and I'm in a very different situation all the way around. My goal for this year is to write more reviews of how a piece of reading made me actually think and feel, not just a recap.

The premise is amazing… the execution leaves something to be desired

How to Solve Your Own Murder by Kristen Perrin

April 11, 2024 by MegsDarcy Leave a Comment

When Frances was a teenager, she receives a bone-chilling fortune that she’ll be murdered one day. She then spends the rest of her life trying to prevent it. But lo and behold, 60 years later, murder comes for her. Now it’s up to her great-niece Annie to find the killer and earn her inheritance. I needed an audiobook that both my mother and I would enjoy listening to on our 13 hour drive. This was a murder-mystery, set in England, unabridged came in at 11.5 […]

Sometimes you just want to escape into another world – this time sports, and tennis in particular.

Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid

September 25, 2023 by MegsDarcy Leave a Comment

Taylor Jenkins Reid has become a must-read for me when a new book is released. Her quick-wit, tight writing, and compelling characters always seem to keep me engaged and her newest book is no exception. One of my favourite aspects of Jenkins Reid books is the fact that her novels never really feel familiar. I don’t read them and get a sense of deja-vu of her past books (or anyone elses) although I always am able to quickly visualize the characters she is writing about […]

A lovely novel taking you into the world of Old Hollywood an behind the imagined curtain of a Hollywood Starlet

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

August 29, 2023 by MegsDarcy Leave a Comment

Oh, I really loved this book. I honestly didn’t know what to expect when I picked it up at Costco of all places. Although it was originally published in 2017, Jenkins Reid is having a moment because of Daisy Jones and the Six and Netflix is supposedly turning this into something. It was in my pile of reads to enjoy while I was at the beach, or in a lawn chair, and could pick up and put down leisurely. Well, I read it in one […]

Summer Road Trips: Listening to Carl Hiaasen books because he’s the only author my husband and I agree on

Bad Monkey by Carl Hiassen

August 29, 2023 by MegsDarcy Leave a Comment

A brief introduction that you can absolutely skip, the review will follow: This summer as I criss and crossed my home province and the neighbouring one- dodging wildfires, construction, tourists, pack of elk or goats standing in the middle of the highway playing chicken with Alberta truckers, it was the not-so-sultry-but-very-sarcastic tones of a Carl Hiaasen novel that filled my car. I like Carl Hiaasen, don’t get me wrong, but at the beginning of the summer I had read three of his books in my […]

Hypothesis: The first book will never be as good as subsequent books from an author if you read them out of order

The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood

August 17, 2023 by MegsDarcy 16 Comments

I wrote a glowing review of Ali Hazelwood’s newest book a few weeks ago. I liked it so much I picked up the first book the author wrote-  The Love Hypothesis. The Love Hypothesis has many of the aspects I liked about the author – a deep and thorough knowledge of working in STEM and strong female characters with great personalities and interests, as well as interesting male leads and supporting characters. But that’s where many of the similarities end. What I liked about Loathe […]

Love to Loathe this set of novellas

Loathe to Love You by Ali Hazelwood

March 23, 2023 by MegsDarcy 2 Comments

I haven’t been able to ‘get’ into any big books lately. My mind has been constantly bombarded by family drama, work drama, and society drama. Every time I’ve tried to sink into a nice big book and get lost I’ve had to set it down and it feels like weeks later before I can pick it up again. But I was flying and at the airport early and wanted something to read that wasn’t attached to a screen. Enter this enchanting little anthology. Three novellas […]
