maydays's Reviews:

All in the golden afternoon….wait…this ALSO seems familiar!

August 17, 2016 by maydays Leave a Comment

Vacation read #2, and the one I was most looking forward to.  Liane Moriarty never disappoints.  She creates such relatable, flawed, and lovely characters. Breezy young parents Sam and Clementine and their Type A friends Erika and Oliver are invited to a barbeque at the home of May/December couple Tiffany and Vid.  For some reason this barbeque has gone horribly wrong, and we spend the book sussing out the details of the incident. In finding out why the incident has been so destructive to these families, […]

Something a bit familiar about this one…

August 17, 2016 by maydays 4 Comments

It’s time for the post-vacation reviews.  I read (almost) 4 books and the details are getting a bit hazy a few days after my return. This was the first of the week and the least memorable for me. Darrow lives on Mars as a Red, the lowest in the intergalactic caste system.  He’s a young married miner, special amongst his people, but oppressed by the powers that be.  A tragedy propels him out of his subterranean bubble and into the world of the upper castes, […]

But then there was this robot-bunny…

July 25, 2016 by maydays Leave a Comment

My son (age 8) came into my room one night with a very serious expression after having finished this graphic novel.  “This was kind of scary and kind of sad and…here.”  He had that glazed look of someone who’s just torn through a whole book, captivated, and hasn’t quite woken from it yet.  Obviously, I was delighted. So I read this, and then my daughter (age 11) read it. We were all similarly captivated, though clearly this is focused for children. When gauging if this […]

“be a conscious citizen of this terrible and beautiful world”

July 21, 2016 by maydays 1 Comment

I’ve always been of the Reading Rainbow school of reading; “Take a look, it’s in a book.” Want to grow a garden?  Better get the book.  Feeling a little blue?  Self-help book.  World’s most strong-willed son?  Book, book, book, (basically the whole parenting section).  Whole country’s gone to hell, and I’m a white woman living in suburbia?  What do I do?  How do I make sense of this?  I read. I ordered this on the day Philando Castile was killed with a baby in the […]

“If you loved…” works better in a bookstore

July 15, 2016 by maydays Leave a Comment

The owner of my local bookstore recommended this bestseller when she tried to show me something lighthearted and I said “I like dark books.”  I got what I asked for! TifAni FaNelli, who goes by Ani in adulthood, has it all by appearances.  A job in NYC in the magazine industry, a very wealthy and handsome fiance, a tiny physique, access to trendy clothes, and a bright future.  We quickly learn that these appearances are HIGHLY orchestrated by our unreliable (and frankly, very unlikely) main […]

I find your lack of Lying Cat disturbing

July 12, 2016 by maydays 8 Comments

I learned of this series in a comment from emmalita and I’m very grateful!  I TORE through Volumes 1-5 last year, trading volumes with my best reading buddy.  It’s the last time I remember staying up until 2am to read.  This is my first time reading a graphic novel series, and I’m still blown away by the art and the ability to convey so much story in each frame. I reviewed Volume 5 before diving in, which was a good idea after a long break. […]
